What is 3 9’s or Three Nines? Availability, Uptime, and Downtime

Three nine or 3 9s availability – 99.9 percent – allows for 8 hours and 46 minutes of Downtime annually. Network downrate literally translates into measurable hours, minutes, and seconds of downtime of authorized network services.

What are the 3 9’s or Three Nines?

We assume that some faults will require a manual decision to trigger the recovery. However, with further automation of this scenario, we assume that only two events per year would require such a decision. Deciding to restore takes 30 minutes; we assume the restore will be completed in 30 minutes. Recovery from this breakdown takes 60 minutes. Assuming two events per year, our estimated impact time for the year is 120 minutes.

This means that the maximum availability threshold is 99.95%. Actual availability also depends on the failure rate, the failure duration, and how quickly each failure is recovered. This architecture requires the application to go offline for a period of time for updates, but these updates are automatic. To do this, we estimate 150 minutes a year: 15 minutes per shift, 10 times yearly. That is up to 270 minutes a year when the service is unavailable, so our design goal for availability is 99.9%.

99.9% Uptime vs. 99.999% Uptime

While 99 percent may not seem like a huge difference, unplanned downtime can cost your business thousands of dollars.

According to Veeam’s 2021 Data Protection Report, the average cost of an hour of downtime is $84,650. While the cost of downtime varies by industry and company size, downtime can quickly become a costly problem. Your business can’t work when your business can’t communicate with customers, and employees can’t collaborate for part of the workday; your business can’t work.

Your Cloud service will always be available to users in a perfect world, but 100% availability is extremely rare. And cloud providers generally do not guarantee zero downtime because a lot can go wrong when dealing with complex cloud infrastructure.
