Weekly Techies #3: Balenciaga Pope and The Controversy Against AI

Balenciaga Pope, and Donald Trump getting arrested.

Midjourney is a text-to-image AI that can generate photorealistic images. It was used to create AI-generated images of Pope Francis in immaculate white drip and a white Balenciaga Puffer Jacket, and pictures of Trump getting arrested.

The image of Pope Francis in a white Balenciaga puffer jacket went viral, fooling thousands of people. However, Midjourney has announced that it’s pulling the plug on offering free trials after AI-generated images of Pope Francis went viral.

Midjourney stopped offering free trials after saying it was “abused”. The change comes after a range of high-profile fake images were created using the tool, including pictures of Donald Trump being arrested and the Pope wearing a stylish jacket. Midjourney CEO, David Holz, announced on Discord that the site was stopping its free trials.

Well, you could say that one (or two) bad apple spoils the barrel. You can still Midjourney service through their premium program though.

Elon Musk and AI experts call for a pause on advanced AI development

Elon Musk and 1,125 others, including AI experts, have signed an open Letter calling for a six-month pause on advanced AI development. The letter, issued by the non-profit Future of Life Institute, called for AI labs to pause training any tech more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4, which launched earlier this month. The letter cited “profound risks” to human society.

Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth?

Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones?

Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us?

Should we risk loss of control of our civilization?

Elon Musk @elonmusk
Old joke about agnostic technologists building artificial super intelligence to find out if there’s a God. They finally finish & ask the question. AI replies: “There is now, mfs!!”

Not surprisingly, many experts oppose the letter; they say ‘ignores the actual harms’.

The letter's signatory, Emad Mostaque, CEO of Stability AI, then tweeted that he didn't think a six-month break was the best idea.

The top AI scientist for Meta, Yann LeCun, on the other hand, declined to sign the letter since he didn't agree with its concept.

A suggestion to stop developing anything whose effects we cannot foresee, according to David Deutsch, a visiting professor of physics at the Centre for Quantum Computation at the University of Oxford, prevented him from signing the letter. He claimed that this would give totalitarian regimes and organized crime time to catch up.

Zoom just got higher IQ

Zoom has recently added new AI-powered features that make collaborative work and chats more convenient. The new features leverage OpenAI’s Large Language Model (LLM) to summarize meetings, generate recaps, and draft Chat and email responses. Some of the key features include:

  1. Zoom IQ chat compose: Zoom Team Chat users will be able to compose messages based on the conversational context and change message tone to customize suggested responses.

  2. Zoom IQ email compose: Users will get email draft suggestions in response to the conversational context from prior Zoom Meetings, Zoom Phone calls, and email threads. Available initially in Zoom IQ for Sales.

  3. Catching up on meetings: Zoom IQ can create chapters and highlights for recorded meetings. The assistant can also help you catch up on meetings that you may have been late to.
