Weekly Techies #2: It's Time to Stop Using Google

I have been using Google since I started browsing the Internet. But now, that might change.

Is Google losing?

With Microsoft integrating GPT-4 and now Dall-E to Bing, it is clear that Bing is currently ahead of Google in terms of its functionalities. You can now have a conversation with Bing, make it write your essays for you, and a ton of other interesting things. Now, it can even draw pictures for you.

Microsoft just brought Dall-E to Bing

Bing is really stepping up its game.

Microsoft said today that its new AI-powered Bing will now allow users to make photos using Bing Talk. DALL-E, OpenAI's generative picture generator, powers this new functionality.

This new function, dubbed "Bing Picture Maker," is already (slowly) going out to users in the Bing preview and will only be available through Bing's Creative Mode. It will eventually make its way to Bing's Balanced and Precise modes. In addition, the new image generator will be featured on the Edge sidebar.

You can try it here.

In fact, I liked it so much that I have tried other AI image generators using the same prompt, and this has produced a lot of interesting results (you can check them out below). I chose the one I liked most to be my new logo.

If you want me to give a full review of each of the AI image generators, please leave a comment below.

Prompt: A red cat with glasses building lego, dark background, looking tired, white whisker, pixel art.

Adding to the fact that the search engine Bing is now powered by GPT-4, it is clear that now Bing is the one leading ahead in the game, in terms of functionality.

The AI plugins

Yesterday, Plugins were just announced by OpenAI.

Plugins link the capabilities and real-time nature of other websites with the strength of OpenAI's Chatgpt, run and interpret codes, or use third-party services.

Plugins can allow ChatGPT to do things like:

  • Retrieve real-time information; e.g., sports scores, stock prices, the latest news, etc.

  • Retrieve knowledge-base information; e.g., company docs, personal notes, etc.

  • Perform actions on behalf of the user; e.g., booking a flight, ordering food, etc.

We’ve added initial support for ChatGPT plugins — a protocol for developers to build tools for ChatGPT, with safety as a core design principle. Deploying iteratively (starting with a small number of users & developers) to learn from contact with reality: openai.com/blog/chatgpt-p…

So basically, ChatGPT connects to apps now.

If you are a general user like me, imagine a day when, as usual, you are using ChatGPT and you inquire about the recipes of your favorite foods. ChatGPT returns you with a little bit introduction about the dish, a list of ingredients, and a step by step guide how to cook it. With plugins, you can now even order the ingredients fresh from your nearest market and get them delivered straight to your home. And that is just the most basic use of Plugins.

It also allows developers to build their plugins upon ChatGPT, so imagine getting a whole ecosystem of plugins on top of AI in the future. That is the future of web browsing.

I just joined the waitlist, let’s just wait to test it in the future.

But, Where is Google?

With all these things happening, you might start wondering: Hey, where is Google?

Well, they’re starting.

Last week, Google unveiled Bard, a conversational AI designed to compete with ChatGPT and other big language models. But, given the system's rocky and late start, users may be apprehensive about putting their confidence in it.

Google Bard is still limited to a small group of testers. So how it is, compared to GPT-4, remains in question.

Well, are you though? (Source: Reddit)

What Bill Gates has to say about AI

Bill Gates just wrote on his website, Gates Notes, about the age of AI.

In the post, he discusses how AI is changing the world and how it will continue to do so in the future. He also talks about the potential benefits and challenges of AI and how we can ensure that it is used for good.

The post is divided into several sections, each of which covers a different aspect of AI. Overall, it provides a good overview of the topic and is a great starting point for anyone interested in learning more about AI.

The development of AI is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet, and the mobile phone. It will change the way people work, learn, travel, get health care, and communicate with each other.

TikTok tries to avoid a ban in U.S. congressional hearing

The CEO of Tiktok, Shou Zi Chew, gave mainly ineffective evidence before the U.S. congressional hearing on Thursday.

Instead of attempting to get any genuine knowledge about how TikTok functions or what it does to safeguard its youngest users from danger, representatives were frequently more interested in airing their own opinions, posing for pictures, and yelling over the CEO's responses to their queries. (There are conspiracy theories that Meta lobbyists are behind those ridiculous questions.)

Nonetheless, a few reasonable queries that were presented during the session received unsettling answers. It was unclear how Project Texas would completely divorce TikTok from its Chinese parent firm, ByteDance.

Project Texas is TikTok's intention to transfer all U.S. user data from its own servers to Oracle servers in the U.S.

@tiktokOur CEO Shou shares his thoughts about the recent congressional hearing and everything TikTok is doing to make it a safe place to connect, create, share and learn.

Furthermore, the executive was unable to confirm where TikTok sells its data. Chew asserted that he did not "think" that they sold to data brokers, but he added that he would have to "come back" to Congress with details regarding potential customers.

Although Chew may be right that TikTok does not gather more data than US social media firms, it is subject to different standards. The CCP might influence TikTok's activities as a Chinese corporation with access to this data. China's 2017 National Intelligence Law, which requires corporations to cooperate in intelligence-gathering operations if requested, poses a threat even though that may not have happened yet. TikTok insists it won't cooperate, but how can it if ByteDance is doing it?

The House representatives also inquired about several aspects of child safety. Strangely, TikTok was the first of the major social media applications in the United States to introduce in-app parental controls and shut down teen accounts, setting the precedent in this area.

Furthermore, TikTok is not the only social media platform that poses risks. The general use of social media is linked to an increase in anxiety, sadness, body dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and other issues, including suicidal ideation.

  • Opera released new features powered by ChatGPT. Check it out here.

At some point this week, trying to keep up with the speed of movement in the AI space was so hard. These are probably the most significant weeks in the development history of AI, and I think using AI in your daily lives is not only in the future anymore.

That’s all for today; see you next week!
