In the history of Ducati’s participation in the MotoGP race, the Ducati Desmosedici super bike, driven by Casey Stoner in the 2007 season, played a significant role. This was when the FIM changed the rules and reduced the engine displacement for MotoGP bikes from 990cc to 800cc in order to increase safety for the racers. Ducati decided to revolutionize the design of their bike to regain the championship after being in a struggling state for several years. The Ducati Desmosedici GP7 was the landmark moment for this.

Filippo Preziosi – the General Director of the Ducati Marlboro Team, along with a team of over 70 professional engineers assigned by Ducati, designed the best racing bike with superior handling features to compete in the prestigious world racing championship.
This model was conceived from the beginning of 2006 by Filippo Preziosi under the name Ducati Desmosedici GP7. Ducati kept the investment cost for the design and construction a secret. However, like other MotoGP racing models from Honda or Yamaha, the Ducati Desmosedici was always the most expensive bike to produce, with costs reaching millions of dollars.

In August 2006, after undergoing numerous rigorous tests on various terrains, the Ducati Desmosedici GP7 model was officially introduced by Filippo Preziosi at the Brno circuit in the Czech Republic. And right from the first unveiling, this bike surpassed its predecessor, the GP6 with a 990cc engine, by achieving a record-breaking test speed of 339.4 km/h. Furthermore, during the qualifying time trial rounds on the Motegi race track in Japan, the Desmosedici GP7 even outperformed the Honda racing bikes.
When MotoGP 2007 kicked off, Casey Stoner was entrusted with driving the Desmosedici GP7 on the Losail circuit in Qatar. This racer quickly set new records for this racing bike and won consecutive races thereafter. Without even competing in all 15 rounds, Casey Stoner became the MotoGP 2007 champion with 4 rounds remaining. From an “unknown” racer, this Australian racer suddenly rose to glory ahead of the “big names” in the MotoGP world thanks to the invaluable contribution of the 800cc gem.

The Ducati Desmosedici GP7 is equipped with an engine designed in the traditional L-Twin style of Ducati, liquid-cooled, with a power output of 168 kW (225 horsepower) at 19,000 rpm. This 800cc engine has a maximum power output of 225 horsepower, allowing the Ducati super bike to reach a top speed of over 330 km/h.

This ability to achieve such high speeds is due to its lightweight and durable design. Most of the bike’s components are made from carbon fiber, super-lightweight aluminum alloys with high heat resistance to avoid any impact on its performance. The body of the bike is made from an aluminum-magnesium alloy, and the pistons are made from super-strong metal compounds to ensure that the engine operates at the highest rpm by minimizing friction.
The Ducati Desmosedici is handcrafted entirely at the Ducati factory located in Borgo Panigale, Bologna, Italy. Every year after “battle,” Ducati upgrades the Desmosedici model with its sequential numbering. In 2010, the Desmosedici GP10 model helped Casey Stoner win 4 races. This was also the most expensive bike in the world, being sold for $320,000 in an auction along with Valentino Rossi’s Desmosedici GP11.

The commercial edition of the Desmosedici RR, derived from the Desmosedici GP7, was sold at a similar price to a luxury car (around $60,000-$75,000). This is a bike that is often chosen by the showbiz world and those with deep pockets, with David Beckham being one of them. The Desmosedici RR is considered a road monster, with its stunning design and high level of excitement. This bike has set speed records when compared to the Ferrari Enzo, making it one of the fastest bikes in the world today.
