Cybersecurity experts have unveiled a new threat on the digital landscape, attributing over 750 distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and 78 website defacements to a hacktivist group called Mysterious Team Bangladesh since June 2022.
The modus operandi of this group centers around targeting logistics, government, and financial sector entities in India and Israel. According to Group-IB, a prominent cybersecurity firm headquartered in Singapore, the motivations driving Mysterious Team Bangladesh are rooted in religious and political ideologies.
This group has also extended its reach to other countries, including Australia, Senegal, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Ethiopia. Their mode of operation involves exploiting known security flaws or weakly-secured passwords to gain access to web servers and administrative panels.
Suspected to originate from Bangladesh, Mysterious Team Bangladesh emphasizes their mission to safeguard “Our Bangladesh Cyberspace” on their Facebook introduction.
Active across social media platforms like Telegram and Twitter, Mysterious Team Bangladesh has been engaging in “Operation Israel” since June 2022, where they claim to support Palestine. Their online presence articulates the group’s resistance against the “Israeli Government killing & torturing Palestine people’s,” pledging cyber-attacks until the alleged atrocities cease.
The threat actor’s emergence came to light in late 2022 when its revealed its intentions to target Indian entities. An attack in December 2022 on India’s Central Board of Higher Education exposed personally identifiable information, triggering a series of Ddos Attacks on several UAE government websites, which are attributed to the same group.
The initial assault campaign on India, occurring on June 22, 2022, emphasized Mysterious Team Bangladesh’s preference for government and financial sector resources. Cybersecurity experts attribute the resurgence of hacktivism globally to ongoing geopolitical conflicts, with hacktivist groups seeking to gain recognition and monetize their information resources through the sale of advertising.
