Sony Introduces PS5 Controller for People with Disabilities at CES 2023

At the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Sony didn't just collaborate with Honda to make electric vehicles. The company also introduced a new project in the game line, namely the Mocopi system for full-body tracking used in games and the metaverse. Sony also introduced Project Leonardo, a new modular Controller designed to assist players with disabilities.

Based on the image shown, the controller features a large round base designed to lay flat on a table, and there are several mounting options as well. A player can use one or two Project Leonardo controllers, a DualSense controller can also be added. In this way, one, two or three controllers can be combined into one virtual controller.

Each Project Leonardo device can be configured by swapping buttons and rearranging them to suit the player's needs. Multiple buttons can be assigned to the same function and two functions can be assigned to the same button. For example, if the game requires the user to simultaneously press R2 and L2.

Joysticks in several sizes can be attached. Available in various sizes to suit players' accessibility needs. The distance between the joystick and the controller can be adjusted as needed and can be mapped in any direction. Button mappings and other configurations are stored in the player's profile and can have up to three configurations.

The basic Project Leonardo controller is highly customizable, but has more potential. There are four additional ports based on the 3.5mm jack which will allow third party switches, buttons and analog sticks to be plugged in. They can be configured just like any other button on the controller.

On this project, Sony has worked closely with AbleGamers, SpecialEffect, StackUp, and other accessibility experts to design this controller. Project Leonardo is still under development, so more features will be rolled out in the future as well as details about the rollout.
