Tesla Optimus Is Incredible For Different Reasons

Tesla has revealed its new Optimus Gen 2 Robot, and while many people jumped to the conclusion, it was AI-controlled. However, it’s not the case (yet), at least in the videos shown. The famous video of the robot folding a T-shirt has been debunked, and we can see an operator on the side.

Nonetheless, Elon Musk’s robot is remarkable for plenty of other reasons, and we’ll explore why in this article.

Optimus Isn’t AI-Controlled… Yet!

When the video showcasing Optimus surfaced, many assumed it was AI-controlled. That’s because Musk and Tesla have been tinkering with artificial intelligence, and their endgame is implementing an AI in the robot. They’ve been using all the data available with Tesla vehicles and their self-driving technology.

However, the robot presented is still operated by an engineer, and Tesla hasn’t unveiled an AI technology capable of running the robot autonomously.

What Really Makes Tesla’s Optimus Mind-Blowing

AI and software issues apart, the architecture of the robot remains mind-blowing, especially considering previous versions. The legs and feet are now closer to how human legs would work with actionable toes, knees, and neck. It creates a surprisingly natural walk, compared to other robots.

Yet, the most impressive part has to be the hands. The level of precision with which it can move and grab an object is beyond anything presented so far, even by Boston Dynamics. The hands also feature sensors on each digit, allowing the robot to adjust the pressure and not break sensitive objects like an egg, for instance. That’s the part people should focus on about this new robot, the potential is incredible.

The head also contains a screen which could display key information, such as the battery level, weather, or ongoing tasks. Finally, it can lift up to 70 kg, and walk at a top speed of 5 mp/h. It’s not the most impressive we’ve seen, but it’s something considering the light design it has.

How Optimus Could Be Used

Optimus could be used in many fields, it could become a home assistant and complete all the daily tasks some people don’t want, or can’t do. Even though the robot will be sold in 2027 for $20,000, it’s obvious that it will become more affordable in the future, leading to more accessibility.

We could envision the robot being used to assist old or disabled people. It would be more reliable and less expensive than a human being, and eliminate the issue of having to worry about the human factor. Since it’s a Tesla technology, let’s not forget, it would probably include exclusive functionalities working with the famously overpriced cars. For instance, it could assist you when you’re doing your groceries, and drive the car back when you’re tired.

Of course, we’re certain there will be other uses (some you don’t want to think about).

A Step Forward for Musk’s Plan

Elon Musk never shied about the fact he had a long term game plan for humanity. After SpaceX’s progress and Tesla becoming one of the biggest car companies worldwide, Optimus could be the next milestone. It could offer a device people will use all the time to free themselves and do something else (the value of what they’ll do is another question).

More free time, would lead to more time to work, yes, but more importantly to improve on one-self, that’s why it mustn’t become an excuse for laziness.
