The Ghost Recon-Like Game Ubisoft Dreams Of — Gray Zone Warfare

Imagine an open world game you can explore alone or in a squad with realistic shooting mechanics and an evolving world. That’s what promises Gray Zone Warfare developed by Madfinger Games. It’s an immersive FPS with a maximum focus on realism.
Immersive tactical shooters are not all that common, and even those who pretend to offer it will often resort to implementing gameplay mechanics that contradict the concept. Ghost Recon Breakpoint was a major let down to us, and it took years for Ubisoft to give us the option to play the game realistically.
The Promise of an Immersive World
The footage unveiled is only pre-alpha, but we already know Gray Zone Warfare will be set in a fictitious country in South East Asia, resembling Laos. Players will enter this open world filled with enemies controlled by the game but also by other players. Due to the emphasis on realism, you’ll need to thread carefully and coordinate with your squad to survive.
Apparently, the world will evolve even when you’re not playing. We still don’t know exactly what it means. However, it could be like Rust, where other players actions impact the world, so you may comeback to find a town slaughtered or building shot and destroyed durably.

Real Tactical Gameplay?
The gameplay trailer showcases a squad of players taking off with a helicopter and touching ground to take down enemies. During the shooting, it seems like the physics are really accurate to real life shooting, but it’s hard to tell without actually playing it. Still, the use of Unreal Engine 5 allows for lots of details on the weapons, and the reloading and shooting animations are impressive. There’s even a short bloom and blur effect simulating your eye adjusting when aiming with a long range scope.
The player is also shown eating military rations with a level of details we’ve never seen in such a game. Moreover, there’s a backpack system with your character’s inventory, and it doesn’t seem 100% accurate to what a soldier could transport, but it’s limited enough to force you to choose. According to the Steam page, the weapons are highly customizable with hundreds of parts to change depending on your play style.

Unique Health System
One of the points that piqued our interest is the health system. Instead of hitting a button to magically patch yourself up, the game aims to offer an intricate system with several tools at your disposal. If you fall and break your leg, you’ll need to react differently than if you get shot and use different tools. Injuries will also hinder the character’s performances and it will be a crucial point to master if you want to survive.

We’re Hyped But…
This first trailer we see of Gray Zone Warfare is particularly enticing. Nonetheless, it’s still in a pre-alpha state, so we hope the game will get better and use the full potential of the Unreal Engine 5 to deliver a type of game that’s way too rare these days.
