It’s that spooky period of the year when everybody dresses up, eats too much candy and watches horror movies once again. We love to give ourselves a good scare, and John Carpenter is the master of horror. So, today, we have a selection that will give you nightmares.

Whether, you’re new to horror or if these movies spooked you in the past, here’s why you should revisit them this year.

Halloween

Halloween is still one of the best slashers of all time, and with it, Carpenter created the ultimate form of evil. A boogeyman with no identity, no emotions, and one you can’t reason with. Dubbed “The Shape”, Michael Myers is always there in the background, and the movie perfectly captures the feel of uneasiness Carpenter became known for. It’s been copied many times, but no one managed to do it better. It’s a must-watch if you want to see how the genre started, but we’d recommend skipping most of the sequels, except maybe Halloween III, which has a unique approach.

The Thing

The Thing is a cult classic, a movie that failed at the box office, but was thankfully redeemed afterwards. It stars Kurt Russel in one of his best roles, and a Lovecraftian creature defying expectations. The movie came out in 1982, but Rob Bottin’s work on the film still beats most modern CGI. The tension is gut-wrenching as you never know who may be the creature.

In The Mouth of Madness

In The Mouth of Madness is a movie we don’t want to spoil you, because the twists are so good. It stars Sam Neill, for one of his best roles, and after watching this one, we’d recommend Possessions to see more of him. The movie follows John Trent, an insurance investigator looking for Sutter Cane, a famous writer who went missing, and the name is a clear reference to Stephen King.

During his journey, Trent will try to recover Cane’s last book, but the author isn’t who he seems, and his books may have more influence on the world than he thought. We’ll leave it at that, but we can guarantee it will surprise you if you’ve never seen it, and maybe you’ll find yourself reconsidering reality itself.

Prince of Darkness

Prince of Darkness is part of Carpenter’s Apocalypse trilogy with The Thing and In The Mouth of Madness. Like in the previous ones, Evil is unavoidable, and the characters will descend into a true nightmare as the night never seems to end. This time, it features a team of science students investigating a mysterious green liquid in the cave of a church, which may bring about the end of the world according to the writings of a cult. It’s a tense movie with spectacular practical effects, except maybe one at the end, but it was made with a very limited budget.

It also has a cast of unknown actors, except for Donald Pleasence, and as they turn against the group one by one, the gigantic church shrinks around the survivors without hope for any help to come.

The Fog

What if something as innocent as fog became a danger? Set in a little town on the coast, the movie is about this mysterious fog covering the city as it gets ready to celebrate its centenary. The city holds a dark secret that will explain why the strange phenomenon is happening. It has been compared with The Mist, Stephen King’s novel, but the menace here is very different and it’s motivated.

The originality of The Fog resides in the setting, with a small coast town and a lot of it revolves around the character of Adrienne Barbeau, Stevie Wayne, a radio host in a lighthouse. Of course, stay away from the terrible remake that came out in 2005, everyone forgot about it for a reason.

That’s Why Carpenter is The Master of Horror

These movies are beyond influential and have redefined different horror genres. They continue to inspire directors of lesser talent, but there’s no beating the original. Unfortunately, Carpenter didn’t get the credit he deserved back when these movies came out, and his career turned sour, but we have hope that he will come back one day, maybe Suburban Screams will give us the Carpenter we loved?
