Silent Night Trailer – John Woo is Back!

Disclaimer: This article is not going to be objective!

We love John Woo, and he’s one of the most influential Hong-Kong directors by a large margin. After a complicated history in Hollywood, he decided to go back to China, but he’s finally offering us a new action Movie after focusing mostly on historical pieces. It’s the first US production since Paycheck, and unlike this movie it has the potential to be one of the best movies to end this year.

A Revenge Story, That’s It!

The trailer shows something fascinating, which we hope is also in the movie: it makes you understand the initial situation without a single dialogue. From the trailer, you immediately understand that the main character lost his daughter and his voice, and that he goes on a killing spree to avenge her. Apparently, the entire movie is void of dialogue, and we can’t wait to see how the director pulls it off.

What follows are epic action scenes, with a lot of practical effects, and that’s a good thing, because the CGI is rough. The CGI car and glass shards in the trailer aren’t looking good, but it’s also because the movie looks like it has a limited budget.

Joel Kinnaman Finally Gets a Main Action Role

Joel Kinnaman had a strange career. Out of nowhere, he was chosen to be the new RoboCop in the 2014 Padilha movie, which was panned by critics and audiences despite being a good movie. It suffered from the comparison with the original and not going for the humorous tone of the first movie, but it was still a good movie.

He also played with Liam Neeson in Run All Night, a correct movie, but nothing to write home about. We then saw him in the terrible Suicide Squad movie, and he came back in the sequel only to die, but he was one of the most likable characters of this ensemble cast. Yet, the only main role he really had so far was in the first season of Altered Carbon. This year, however, he came back with the interesting Sympathy For The Devil, where he sits in a car with Nicolas Cage (it’s definitely worth watching!) and gives a great performance, despite being overshadowed by Nick Cage (who wouldn’t?!).

So, this movie really is a sort of comeback for him, and we’ll have to see the movie, but it looks like he can carry it.

Non-Stop John Woo Action

The trailer is packed with action scenes, and we can imagine that they’ll make for the biggest part of the movie. However, that’s where we think people will see the difference with the John Wick movies, because action isn’t only about filming people fighting, it’s also about the eye of the director, showing the right angle at the right time and cutting at the right time too.

Clearly, we’re excited to see this return to form for the man who brought us The Killer, Hard-Boiled, and many other iconic movies. It will obviously have issues, like the CGI, but it may just be the best Christmas movie we had in a while.
