Henry Cavill Argylle Trailer: A New Spy Comedy

After a while without news from the ex-Superman, yesterday a new trailer starring Henry Cavill dropped. This time, it’s a new spy action comedy directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman), and below you’ll find the trailer.

What can we expect from this movie with a massive cast? Let’s find out with our breakdown of the trailer.

What is Argylle About?

Argylle is an action comedy telling the story of Ellie Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), a successful spy thriller author known for her Argylle saga. Conway is struggling to finish her new book, when she gets pulled in the real spy world and discovers that the adventures told in her books have a real impact in the world of spies.

From the trailer, we can already see how Matthew Vaughn plays with the fictitious world of the author’s books, and the “real” world of spies, which looks crazier than what she could ever write. We believe this will lead this insecure author on a journey to discover her true nature, similar to Eggsy in Kingsman, at least that’s what is suggested here.

An Ambitious Cast… And a Cat?

The cast of this new movie is filled with high-profile actor. It features Henry Cavill as the super spy Argylle, John Cena as his partner (probably a traitor), Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Bryan Cranston, and Sofia Boutella.

The trailer also insists a lot on the presence of Conway’s CGI cat. This cat is also part of the adventure she’ll go through, and it’s clear that this fur ball with uncanny effects will play a bigger part than expected, given the shots in the trailer and the movie’s tagline: “Don’t let the cat out of the bag”.

This hints at the fact that, the cat will have a role and letting it out of the backpack he’s in will have consequences.

It Could Be Awesome Or a Disaster

If Kingsman was a clear take on James Bond by Vaughn, with a free interpretation of the eponym comic books, this one feels closer to Mission Impossible with the added layer of some of the adventures being written by one of the characters. It’s not a new concept by any means, but the directing talent of Vaughn gives hope for a compelling story, and crazy action scenes.

That’s what made the first Kingsman a cult-classic, and seeing that Vaughn still applies himself to creating perfectly choreographed scenes with colorful visuals and a love for symmetry is encouraging. However, we know he needs a bit of restrain, because when his hands are free it results in movies like the second Kingsman movie, which was too much of a good thing in our opinion, especially story-wise. It kind of dissolved into meaningless action scenes at the end without the impact it had in the first one.

Let’s hope this is the case here, and that we get all his extravagance with a clear direction. Moreover, the theme of the movie revolves mostly around Bryce Dallas Howard’s character and her misadventures with Sam Rockwell, which is a good starting point, but it needs to have some sort of twist around the second act to keep us engaged.

His Name is Cavill, Henry Cavill

Seeing Cavill as a super spy immediately reminds us that he could have played James Bond. In the current climate it won’t happen and he’s getting older, which isn’t helping. However, before Argylle comes out, we can recommend another movie where Cavill plays a spy: The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

It’s directed by Guy Ritchie, who’s friends with Matthew Vaughn, so we can see how these two movies connect and the link with Cavill’s casting choice. It’s a great movie, with a real director on board, blending comedy, mischief, and action on a scale we rarely see these days. It’s also the closest we’ll probably ever get from Henry Cavill as James Bond in the main role, so we recommend it if you haven’t seen it.
