Henry Cavill’s Highlander: A Reboot To Watch Out For

Henry Cavill has become since 2013 one of the biggest Hollywood stars, from his introduction to mainstream audiences with Man of Steel to the regrettable failure of Netflix’s The Witcher, the actor has been highly regarded by fans for his performances. He has shown that he was a real fan of the movies he was part of, like his role of Geralt in which he’s perfect, despite the lack of quality of the show.

After leaving the show and not returning as Superman due to the James Gunn reboot of the DC Universe, Cavill is now getting on with more exciting roles. We still know little about the Warhammer 40K project for now, but he’s also been cast for the Highlander reboot. Let’s talk about it.

What is Highlander?

Let’s recap, because there maybe some people who never heard of Highlander. Highlander is a movie released in 1986, directed by Russell Mulcahy, and starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown. This movie didn’t really perform well at the time, only racking up $12 million on a $16 million budget.

However, the movie became a cult classic when it released in VHS, which prompted nonsensical sequels, inflated Christophe Lambert’s ego, and ended with a TV show in the 90s with Adrian Paul and a fantastic opening by Queen.

The movie tells the story of Connor McLeod of the clan McLeod, a Scottish swordsman and warrior living in 1518. McLeod is an immortal, which burdens him as he keeps losing his loved ones. As the tagline of the movie says: “there can be only one”, so the immortals look for each other to kill each other.

The only way to kill an immortal is to behead him, which then gives the surviving immortal his powers through lighting. The hero sees his mentor get killed by another immortal, The Kurgan, and goes on a quest to kill him hundreds of years later. It’s pure 80s, and we love it.

Ryan Reynolds Was Supposed To Be The Lead

The project of rebooting the Highlander movies isn’t new. In fact, it has been in talks for years, and at first the studios wanted to have Ryan Reynolds as Connor McLeod. It would have been an odd choice, and knowing Reynolds love for comedy, it would have created a very different result than what we expect from a Highlander movie.

Perhaps, it would have been closer to what we’ve seen with the recent Dungeons & Dragons movie, which is a great movie. However, it wouldn’t really fit the darkness of the universe depicted in the 80s movie, and it would’ve been quite disappointing.

The Potential Start of a Franchise

Henry Cavill is now attached to the project as the lead, which is good news, and we expect a great performance from him, if his role as Geralt is anything to go by. One of the directors of John Wick, Chad Stahelski, who has also been a stunt double for Keanu Reeves for years (and replaced Brandon Lee as The Crow after his passing), is set to direct. He recently went on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and discussed the project.

The director confirmed the project was still on the rails and going well. He also explained that the goal was to plan ahead and not kill everyone in the first movie to avoid the mistakes of the original trilogy. He also gave insight by clarifying that they’re taking the prequel approach and will take all the content produced into account to reboot the universe, so it includes the movies and the TV show.

It’s no small feat for a story that spans thousands of years, and also goes a bit crazy. For example, will Zeist, the planet of origin of the immortals, be acknowledged or not? (probably not, we hope so…) Will we start by following Ramirez (Sean Connery)? There are still many questions around the project, but we hope it results in something the fans can enjoy.
