Aquaman 2 Trailer: A Challenge Ahead

James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently preparing the reboot of the DCU, but before this can happen, we have one last Movie to get through and forget: Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom.

This sequel has a challenge ahead of it, and its first trailer isn’t convincing. Here’s the trailer and our breakdown of it.

The Problem With Aquaman’s Character

Aquaman is a complicated Character to adapt to cinema, and not only because he looks ridiculous. The first movie managed to embrace the cheesiness of the universe with colorful visuals, but the character has other issues. In the comics, at least the classics, Aquaman is a humble man always looking after his people. However, in the first movie, he had a very different personality, joking like a Joss Whedon character, probably due to the 2017 Justice League.

In the first movie, we had a rather serious character with a few quips here and there. In this trailer for the upcoming movie, he looks more lighthearted and even laughs out loud like a big kid. We can’t tell for now, but we hope this evolution is justified, especially because it feels like we’ve had a different character every time he appeared on-screen.

Aquaman’s Suit Looks Strange

The Aquaman suit has always been complicated to commit to the silver screen. In Batman V Superman and most of the movies, he has been shown bare-chested with the now iconic tattoos. However, this design was only meant for the origin of the character, before he becomes the king of Atlantis. After that, we’ve had two styles, the first we’ve seen was at the end of the first Aquaman and it went all out with the comic books style. This was surprisingly colorful, but it worked with the tone of the movie.

In Snyder’s Justice League, Momoa had a less flashy outfit, with mostly green and touches of gold, inverting the usual design, and it worked with the more serious tone of the movie. This new movie keeps the design of the first movie… Well, almost!

In the trailer, the suit sometimes looks like a cosplay with fake muscles. A surprising choice given that Momoa is a muscular dude and he clearly doesn’t need it. He looks heavier and he’s significantly larger, which goes against the lean silhouette seen prior. It’s an important change, because in the first movie it was believable to see him swim faster than a torpedo.

The Return of Black Manta

The trailer clearly shows that Black Manta is back and this time he won’t be a secondary villain but the main antagonist. Apparently, he managed to get a black trident, which makes him powerful enough to tear down Atlantis. Arthur Curry will have to free his brother Orm (the villain of the previous movie) to fight him. We expect a Thor/Loki relationship, seeing how this is presented.

Black Manta is well-portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and looks terrifying. A performance given the character he’s supposed to play, and the design of the costume. They managed to sell it in the first movie, let’s hope they can make him ominous in this one.

Amber Heard Is In Aquaman 2

Her dog may have stepped on a bee, but Amber Heard is still in this movie (if you watch closely, there’s 1 shot of her in the trailer). Given the scandals surrounding her, she’s been written off from the movie, and apparently the movie will focus more on Nicole Kidman’s character (Aquaman’s mother).

Also, from the only scene we see, Mera is trapped and tries to escape by banging on a window. This could be indicative that the character dies early in the movie and is the first casualty of Black Manta, and that’s a good thing. Her acting abilities are limited, and there was little to no chemistry between her and Momoa anyway.

The Pratical Effects Are Amazing, But The CGI…

The first Aquaman surprised everyone, with James Wan showing his talent to film action. This second movie, needs to live up to this surprise, and make a lot of money to inspire Warner to keep going. It’s a lot of hopes and expectations resting on one movie, and the failures of the recent DC productions make it even harder.

This sequel keeps the visual identity of the first movie with a lot of CGI. Something that worn us down in the first movie. This time it seems like there a more practical effects, mostly on the creatures, and more locations, which could help make it more bearable. In any case, at best, we’ll get mindless fun with some impressive shots. At worst, we’ll get a boring and schlocky movie to laugh at.
