The Musk, The Zuck & The AI

Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, have been to Washington recently to discuss artificial intelligence. Other big tech representatives were present, the goal was to give these experts points of views.

The US lawmakers have convoked the most prominent tech personalities, which has been largely covered by media outlets. Here’s what has been said, and why these meetings are important, not only for the US.

Why Are All These People in Washington?

If you haven’t followed recent news, the Congress has been hearing various tech personalities, including those we mentioned in the introduction, to discuss AI regulation. Since these are some of the smartest people at the forefront of one of the most prominent industry of our modern society, their opinions are valuable.

The US lawmakers are tackling the quick rise of artificial intelligence head on to create laws that will define how it’s supposed to be used. In addition to Musk and Zuckerberg, we’ve also seen Bill Gates, Sundar Pichai the current CEO of Google, Sam Altman, the founder and CEO of OpenAI attend.

AI Needs a “Referee”

When Elon Musk exited the capitol he gave a few interesting words to the press summing up the situation. He explains that this new technology needs a referee. The role of this referee would be to ensure every actor of the new AI market plays fair. However, as he points out, it’s better to be proactive than reactive, which has been an issue with other technologies in the past like cryptocurrencies.

The congress is gathering the expertise of Musk and other eminent tech CEOs to create the legal playground for AI. It’s an essential question to solve, since the issues we could potentially encounter with this technology go far beyond what we’ve known so far. Moreover, AI has so many potential applications, it has already started to infiltrate many sectors, and continues to expand and grow in various industries.

The repercussions of a misuse of AI, or a dysfunction could then be catastrophic for our society, and tackling it now is the only solution. Yet, if laws are created, they need to be safeguards, but also have a certain flexibility. Other countries look at what the US is doing right now about AI, and their laws will be taken into consideration, so the laws should also be future-proof, giving the possibility to adapt them coherently as we discover the potential of AI.

3:10 To AI

According to Musk, AI poses a “civilizational risk”, which must be addressed by the lawmakers. He suggested the creation of a new federal agency in charge of supervising AI and its applications. However, this begs the question of the global handling of this technology.

Even if the US start regulating AI, which would be a first step, we still need these laws to be followed by other countries. This will hardly be a problem in the West, but there are many countries who probably won’t agree to follow these regulations, and non-US-based AI companies won’t abide by these laws either.

A New Industrial Revolution In The Making

We’ve compared the rise of AI with the industrial revolution of the last century with our images, and it’s not innocent. AI is so revolutionary it may change the world as much if not more than industrialism. It’s already starting to change how we approach work, and it may become a menace to the common worker.

It’s a change that’s still hard to fully grasp, but we believe it’s inevitable. Global economies are already shifting, and automatization will grow even more than before. This will force people to adapt to these new rules, and that’s why setting fair rules ahead is vital.
