GoPro 12: Still The Go-To For Action Cameras?

GoPro has just unveiled the Gopro Hero 12 Black. This new camera promises tons of new features to allow its users to film their adventures, parties, and everything a traditional camera can’t without being broken (or you’re Bruce Wayne). GoPro was the first brand to offer small and resistant cameras, but since then there has been changes and other brands have created similar products.

So is GoPro still relevant? Is this new camera worth buying? Let’s investigate!

What’s New With The GoPro 12?

The new GoPro 12 promises more features like a longer battery life or Bluetooth support. Before we analyze these features, here what the new camera will have to offer:

  • Bluetooth audio support
  • HDR
  • Different shooting format without tilting the camera
  • Max Lens 2.0 (to buy)
  • Increased battery life (Up to 2x longer runtime according to GoPro)
  • New Photo Modes: Interval, Star Trails, Vehicle Light Trails, Light Painting (with possibility to capture videos and stills at the same time)
  • HyperSmooth 6.0 Stabilization
  • GP Log
  • Time code Sync
  • 2 Channels Audio Recording
  • Simplified UI
  • GoPro App for Windows and macOS

Pricing of the GoPro 12 Hero Black

The GoPro 12 Hero has a standard pricing for this type of camera, and it’s a $100 less than its DJI equivalent, but there’s a twist. Here’s a list of the product’s pricing:

  • GoPro 12 Hero Black (Camera Only): $399.99
  • GoPro 12 Hero Black + Accessories Bundle (Doesn’t include the Max Lens 2.0): $449.99
  • GoPro 12 Hero Black + Max Lens 2.0: $479.99

As you can see the camera alone is sold for $400, but if you want the Max Lens 2.0, which allows the GoPro to play in the same ballpark as the DJI, you’ll be paying $80 more (with a “discount” from GoPro, without it’s $499.98). Also, there’s no bundle allowing you to get the accessories and the Max Lens 2.0 at the same time, which means you’ll have to pay for a Max Lens bundle and then buy accessories to create decent results.

Not Addressing The Main Issues

If you browse reviews of people buying GoPro cameras, you’ll come across the same issues, including the battery overheating, or the camera bugging and making you lose your shot. These are common issues that have plagued these action cameras for a while now.

However, the new presentation doesn’t address this issue at all. Even worse, we’re still on the same battery format only more powerful, and we’ve found charts of people able to test this new camera with a temperature warning with some settings.

New For GoPro But Not By Industry Standards

The features we’ve just listed can seem impressive if you’ve only ever handled a GoPro, but by industry standards, it’s about time GoPro included those. For instance, the various shooting formats are already available on the Insta360 GO 3. The professional features like the GP log and time code sync have already been standards for other brands for a while now too. So, it’s new for a GoPro user, but it should have been implemented long ago.

This new action camera tries to pander to inexperienced users and professionals with a revamped UI with all the automatic settings you can dream of as a newbie, and more pro features for those who want to go into the nitty-gritty and get pro results.  Even though we haven’t had the opportunity to try it yet, this seems like a challenge, and we’ll wait to see if they succeed (we’re skeptical).

Better Alternatives To The GoPro

If, like us, you think the GoPro 12 doesn’t improve enough upon the GoPro 11, It’s not an issue since there are alternatives. For us, the most impressive action camera you can get is the DJI Osmo Action 4. It has a better camera, offering 4K at 120 fps with a 155° FOV. The GoPro 12 requires you to buy the $100 Max Lens 2.0 mod to enjoy this FOV at only 60 fps. The audio is significantly better with better noise reduction (just check this test out, courtesy of Steve’s Tech Emporium, to see what we mean). This camera already has a log mode, the 10 bit color resolution and incredible stabilization.
