Godzilla Minus One: The Most Violent of The Franchise?

Godzilla is probably the most iconic giant monster in cinemas, and if in the West, he’s starring in big blockbuster action movies alongside Kong, in Japan his story has been very different. During the 80s and 90s, the Toho Kaiju went into strange territories, but after the 1998 Godzilla movie we’ve seen a separation from the Japanese and American version.

After the tour de force that was Shin Godzilla, we’re finally getting a new Japanese movie, and the trailer shows a very different monster than what you may be used to if you’ve only watched the American versions.

The Godzilla Minus One Trailer Hits Different

After a mysterious teaser trailer barely revealing anything, we now have a full-length trailer. In typical Godzilla-fashion, we only see glimpses of our favorite nuclear monster, but we learn a lot about the story of this new, shall we say horror, movie.

It shows a more somber tone than what we’ve ever seen before, and that’s saying something considering how dark Shin Godzilla was. From the sets and look of the film, it looks like it takes place at least 40 years before the last movie, but after the 1954 movie, since people seem to already know who Godzilla is. This version of the monster isn’t a good guy, or a bad guy, he’s shown like a natural disaster, and the trailer focuses a lot on the human characters. Namely, civilians, and a handful of soldiers.

This Godzilla is More Gruesome Than Ever

With a story taking place in a postwar Japan, we also have shots that strongly evoke the nuclear blasts Japan has been through, with a striking one showing people in shock right before a blast takes them away. It’s clearly going to tackle this trauma that has changed the Rising Sun Nation.

Godzilla is shown to have no mercy, relentlessly destroying everything and sparing no one. The few scenes of destruction we can see are truly impressive and with $150 million budget we can really see the step up from the already amazing Shin Godzilla. The monster is more agile, and different from the one we’ve seen before, it also seems like his skin is burning in the last shot, probably following a strike from the military, which only seems to anger him even more.

Why Is It Called Godzilla Minus One?

The title of the movie may not be obvious to everyone, but the trailer kind of explains it in a neat way. After the war, Japan was at “level zero”, meaning the nation had to surrender, it was ashamed and broken economically and morally. In this movie, Godzilla arrives when Japan is slowly trying to recover, but when something of this magnitude comes to kick down a country already on the first floor, it can only go below ground.

This is also why we think this movie is going to be very gruesome and dramatic, as it touches upon one of the most traumatic episodes of Japan history, and depicts a world where it gets even worse after that.

Godzilla Minus One Release Date & Expectations

Godzilla Minus One will release December 1st 2023 in theaters, with even IMAX screenings to enjoy the destruction caused by the Kaiju. Of course, it’s not the American version, so we expect more focus on the human characters than on the monster. It will also be a criticism of the Japanese society, which many people may not understand, but it will be interesting to see how Takashi Yamazaki treats his characters in this special era.

However, given what we see in the trailer and what he gave us in Shin Godzilla, we expect nothing short of spectacular with his technique mixing practical and CGI in an amazing way. The destruction already feels more impactful than what we’ve seen before from the monster, and we can’t wait to see more of it.
