Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Netflix Tries To Get Its Own Star Wars

Netflix has released the first trailer for Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder’s next project. They hope to launch a sci-fi franchise, and the project draws heavy inspiration from Dune, and Star Wars. After years of mysterious teasing, we can finally see what this two part movie will have to offer, and here’s everything you should know about Rebel Moon.
Rebel Moon Could Have Been a Star Wars Story
Shortly after all the Disney shenanigans with Lucasfilm, and the current universe of the Galaxy far, far away, Rebel Moon was a Star Wars movie. Zack Snyder pitched his idea in 2012 for a more mature take on the universe. Of course, at the time, he was working with DC on his Man of Steel, but he wasn’t in charge of the DCEU. It was then reworked as a series (probably with the idea to launch it on Disney+ and help this then secret upcoming platform). However, it ended as what we’re about to get now, a Netflix movie split into two parts.

Rebel Moon Has An Interesting Cast
Although we didn’t see the entire cast through this first trailer, what has been officially revealed is pretty interesting acting-wise. We have Sofia Boutella (Kingsman) in her first main role, accompanied by Charlie Hunnam (The Gentlemen), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), and Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy, Blood Diamond).
However, according to IMDB, the movie will also have the legendary Anthony Hopkins, Justice League’s Cyborg Ray Fisher, and Bae Doona, a Korean actress known for Sense 8 or more recently The Silent Sea. We’re not even mentioning everyone, but all across the board we have a talented cast, and the trailer confirms it.

Give Zack More Budget, Netflix!
The universe depicted is creative with a lot of ideas, and the Star Wars inspiration is clear. However, Snyder manages to develop something more mature and differential the visuals enough. It’s an ambitious project with a lot of visual effects.
Nonetheless, Rebel Moon has a budget of only $86 millions to $90 millions. For comparison, the two-hour-long Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny had a budget way over $300 millions. This will probably be a four-hour experience with two separate movies. It shows in the trailer, as some effects are clearly better than others. Netflix is clearly not investing enough in what could be the start of a long-running franchise. It will also probably have merch, sequels, and spin-offs if the movie gathers enough audience.

Are You Expecting Rebel Moon?
Zack Snyder is a director with a strong visual identity, and he has made divisive choices over the years. For instance, we enjoyed 300, his Snyder Cut of the Justice League, and Dawn of the Dead, but Army of the Dead was a serious let-down. Still, he has passion for what he does, and he always manages to create striking visuals, so we’re waiting to see what Rebel Moon has to offer.
