Mission Impossible 7 Review: Is It The Blockbuster of The Summer?

We’ve covered Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part I extensively before its release, and we’re a bit late to the party, but we’ve been able to see it in theater, caramel pop-corn and diet soda in hand. So, today we offer you our review of the film.
It Delivers on The Action
If you’re going to see Mission Impossible for the action scenes, we can definitely say that the Movie delivers in this regard. It starts strong after the introduction (we’ll talk about it later), the desert gunfight and airport chase get us right into the movie at a rapid pace. It’s frenetic in a good way.
For the gunfight, we have a sand storm, which the characters use to their advantage, and it’s a good start. The airport scene brought us back to the origin of the series, with all the spy shenanigans you can expect and the double-crossing typical of such movies. Later on, we’re in the streets of Rome for an intense car chase going on for about 20 minutes without ever feeling boring, which is an accomplishment.
There are other action scenes here and there, and the movie never lets you catch your breath, which is its strong suit. It culminates with the train scene, offering story development while delivering some tense moments. The end when the train falls reminded us of the Uncharted 2 sequence, and even though some visual effects weren’t the best, it was enough to entertain us.

Strange Acting, and Awkward Story-Telling
Despite some solid action scenes, and great performances from Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell, not everyone is on par with the leads for this movie. Some actors tend to overact, we’re thinking about Henry Czerny, and Vanessa Kirby.
Moreover, the opera scene stood out with a couple dialogues in offices and the train. You’ll tell us what you think about it, but during the opera scene almost everyone has red eyes, and is smiling or holding a laugh for no reason (we believe Mary Jane had something to do with it). It has taken out of the movie, and some lines are definitely cheesy, which made us laugh.
Outside of sometimes out of place lines, the story-telling is sometimes rushed and lacks substance. It feels like the delays due to the pandemic have affected the movie in this regard. Moreover, the fact that the movie is a two-parter makes for an awkward ending, and we felt like the movie was at its mid-junction when it was ending.

A Terrifying Enemy That Has Yet To Show Its Potential
The enemy of the movie is interesting. It’s basically a super AI, so unlike previous villains, you can really catch it. It shows that it can foresee all the characters’ decisions, and it hides Gabriel (its agent of chaos) from all security systems. During the movie, there’s a scene where Ethan is chasing after Gabriel and follows Benji’s directions. Ethan realizes too late, he’s following the AI’s directions.
It took a classic Mission Impossible scene and made it original with this twist, but it also reveals how powerful and dangerous this enemy can be. However, after this scene, it seems like the AI is dialed back to give more time to Gabriel, his side-kick Paris, and Eugène Kittridge. It’s not a bad thing, but we have to see how it turns out in the second part.

Is Mission Impossible Worth Watching?
Overall, Mission Impossible is a simple movie that shines thanks to Tom Cruise’s performance and the dynamic duo he forms with Hayley Atwell. The action scenes are breathtaking, but the story is lacking. We hope the second part will make up for it. Still, it’s an entertaining movie that deserves to be seen in theaters for the stunts and carefully crafted action scenes. We hope the basis built here will be correctly used in the sequel.
