The month of July is packed with huge blockbuster releases, surprise hits, and expected failures. However, we’re seeing something we haven’t seen in a long time in cinemas: double features. Two diametrically opposed movies, Barbie and Oppenheimer, are currently sold together in AMC theaters throughout the US. A unique phenomenon, which raises questions.

How are these two movies linked? Keep reading to learn more about this intriguing news, and how we believe it may have something to do with Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning.

Barbenheimer Origins

The fact that the two movies are shown back-to-back comes from the internet. Since the two are set to release the same day and are polar opposites, people started to create memes mixing the movie posters, and video edits using the trailers. With Barbie being a fun and light-hearted movie with colorful visuals, and Oppenheimer having such a serious tone, it creates a funny effect, and it became super popular.

The marketing teams behind the movies were quick to react with interviews with the cast and crew of both movies revolving around this connection. This hyped people, and many moviegoers bought tickets to see both movies on the same day, which led AMC to offer double feature tickets.

An Alliance Against The Cruise?

Barbie and Oppenheimer released on the same day and exactly a week after Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part I. The Tom Cruise spy thriller is one of the most expected movies of 2023, and it’s a real contender for both movies. Naturally, it’s hard not to see this double featuring as an attempt to gain some steam against a more attractive movie with a real lead actor.

Margot Robbie had some good hits but never had a lead actress, and the rare times when she was the only name on the movie poster, the projects fell into oblivion like I, Tonya, for instance. On the other hand, Oppenheimer rests entirely on the reputation of Christopher Nolan as a genius director, a fleeting image after the Tenet debacle. Both movies are also new IPs, whereas Mission Impossible is a known franchise originating from an iconic show of the 60s with the star power of Tom Cruise. So, it’s understandable that both production companies look for ways to counter this behemoth, and the double feature looks like the solution.

An Old Trend Brought Back To Life

The double feature is something that has been popular during the early days of cinema, when movies only lasted around 20 minutes. However, this trend really had its peak during the 70s, when independent cinema had an important spot in the industry. It quickly disappeared when directors like Spielberg and Lucas had their first successes, and changed how movies were made.

Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez did try to offer a similar show with their Grindhouse project, but it was an exception and more of an homage than a real revival. Yet, in the history of cinema, it’s the first time a double feature is offered on such big productions and such different movies. It’s usually to show similar movies and the contrast is interesting since you go from the darkest and most depressing movie to the most light-hearted production of the year.
