Tom Cruise Box Office Success: Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning

With the recent release of Tom Cruise’s latest Mission Impossible movie, the 61 years old star proved once again that people will go to the theater for a movie worth their time. So, in the light of the struggling Indiana Jones, and Pixar’s Elemental absolute lack of attention, here’s a look at Mission Impossible and how Tom Cruise manages to be the last standing Hollywood movie star.
The Biggest Launch of The Franchise
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I collected $80 million domestically over five days, which is the biggest launch for a Mission Impossible film. It’s less than the predictions, but if you consider international scores it currently stands tall with $235 millions, which is incredible compared to other similar productions.
The movie has a budget of $291 millions, to which you can add $100 millions with the various marketing campaigns and extras the studio isn’t disclosing. So, we have a movie which almost recouped its budget in less than a week and still has all summer to make a profit. It shows that people still want big budget action movies that are well-crafted.

Oppenheimer and Barbie: A Tough Competition?
With Indiana Jones failing hard at the box office, Tom Cruise’s blockbuster had an open field for its first week, and the only real competition has been Sound of Freedom, the surprise hit we’ve discussed here. However, Oppenheimer and Barbie will be releasing in just a few days.
Oppenheimer is particularly expected, since it’s Christopher Nolan’s latest project, entirely shot in IMAX, and promising an impressive spectacle with its practical recreation of a nuclear explosion. On the other hand, you have Barbie, a movie that surprisingly people seem to want to see. None of these movies are action movies like Mission Impossible, but they will still draw attention, and slow down Cruise’s box office run.

Why Mission Impossible Works?
Mission Impossible has been on the up since Ghost Protocol, when Tom Cruise decided to have a more hands-on approach and used his power as a producer to choose the director, and craft the movie he wanted to see. In some cases it doesn’t work, but it seems like Cruise has a good understanding of cinema and audiences, which helped him turn Mission Impossible in a billion dollar franchise.
On a surface level, some may think it’s only because he does his own stunts, but it’s deeper than that. Mission Impossible movies have a straightforward plot, but the focus is clearly put on the characters, and the emotional connection is then reinforced with the death-defying stunts. It’s a movie anyone can pick up and watch to enjoy a rollercoaster of emotions, without having to watch ten movies and TV shows before, like for the MCU.
