Secret Invasion Review: More of What You Can Expect From Disney

Disney+ has released Secret Invasion, the latest Marvel show revolving around Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. This show promised a darker tone with a spy thriller approach closer to Winter Soldier than other Marvel productions.

Well, there’s what the studio wants to make, and then there’s the final product. SPOILERS: if you haven’t watched it yet, don’t hurt yourself, read our review instead.

What is Secret Invasion Supposed To Be?

Before diving into the Disney+ show, allow us to explain to you what Secret Invasion is supposed to be in the comics, to help you understand how much potential has been wasted. This major storyline started in 2008 and depicted a global-scale infiltration of Earth by shapeshifting aliens known as Skrulls.

They have the ability to mimic the appearance, but also the powers, of the superheroes they come across. In the comics, they manage to infiltrate the Avengers and various governmental agencies like SHIELD. It lasts years without any of them being detected in the comics.

The storyline begins with Luke Cage, now leader of the New Avengers, and he grows suspicious of Elektra (Daredevil’s “girlfriend”), who’s supposed to be dead, but returns and acts out of the ordinary. The investigation slowly reveals the scale of the invasion. Once the Skrulls are discovered, the conflict becomes open, but their abilities make the fight difficult.

In the end, the Skrulls are defeated, but the conflict has lasting repercussions on the continuity, similar to Infinity War, or Civil War. This isn’t what Disney delivers with this show.

Stop Trying To Make The Villain an Antihero

If you’ve watched reviews of Captain Marvel (let’s face it, no one has seen the movie), you probably heard that it features a young Nick Fury helping Brie Larson’s character fight Skrulls. However, in a miserable attempt to shock the audience, she finds out that the Skrulls aren’t the bad guys, they’re just looking for a home.

A twist we’ve been served time and time again, like in Falcon and The Winter Soldier (and the redheaded kind-hearted terrorist). It simply doesn’t work, and it just makes the show look like it’s trying to downplay the evil actions of the antagonists (which it is). So, instead of a global invasion, we’re now left with a rebel cell within the species taking over the good guys.

The Budget Problem, Once Again!

If you’ve watched the trailer, you’ve probably guessed it, the storyline has been scaled down. Obviously, Disney can’t use Spider-Man, Iron Man or Captain America, because they’re not here anymore, but the spy thriller approach shouldn’t prevent superheroes to be a part of it. This is what we’re here for, and what could make for an interesting theme with how even the strongest heroes can be defeated by the Skrulls tactics is now just an uninspired Body Snatchers rip-off.

Sure, Samuel L. Jackson carries the show on his shoulders, but it’s not enough to make a show, we’ve seen it with Tulsa King for instance, which despite Stallone’s presence never managed to take off. Even worse, the story isn’t about its main character (what a surprise!), it’s about Emilia Clarke’s character, a Skrull torn between the two warring factions.

Secret Invasion Deserved a Build up

Overall, the show feels thrown together hastily, because Disney needs to churn out more content to feed us like pigs. IGN already got paid, so the show got a 7/10, but the She-Hulk disaster took its toll on the MCU, and even Rolling Stone is taking a warm dump over the first two episodes.

So, don’t stream it, don’t watch it, your hard-earned money deserves to be spent on something better than Secret Invasion and its rubbery CGI. The MCU is slowly sinking, watch it go down, it’s more entertaining.
