Tom Cruise’s MI7 Vs. Nolan’s Oppenheimer: Fighting For IMAX Screens

Tom Cruise is a man known for his determination, and even Harrison Ford praises him for his performances. Mission Impossible movies have been Cruise’s playground for years, and he’s also producing his movies. With the seventh episode of Ethan Hunt’s adventures, the actor has to contend with another blockbuster, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

So why is Tom Cruise angered by the upcoming release of Oppenheimer, despite the vast differences between the two movies? Keep reading to find out more about the actor’s issues with this summer’s release schedule.

Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Needs IMAX

Mission Impossible probably is the biggest action movie to come this year, both in terms of scope, and expectations. Tom Cruise is known for doing a lot of his stunts and the Mission Impossible gathers people thanks to the carefully crafted action sequences blending practical and CGI for a big spectacle, without going overboard like a Fast & Furious.

So, having IMAX screens is crucial for the movie’s success at the box-office, Tom Cruise knows it and he has been personally working with executives to get as many screens as possible. However, another movie is set to release a week later, and it may cause some problems for Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part I.

Oppenheimer: The Auteur’s Blockbuster

Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated movie about the Manhattan Project, which led to the creation of the atomic bomb. At first glance, the two movies have nothing in common, but Nolan is known for his love of IMAX, and the 3 hours-long feature is entirely shot using this 70 mm reel. They’ve also recreated what an atomic bombing looks like, using state-of-the-art cameras to capture it practically.

So, it’s also a highly expected movie for the technical achievements alone. The problem is that Oppenheimer is set to release just one week after Mission Impossible 7, so after a first week, Tom Cruise will have to go against a movie people will flood to see in IMAX.

The actor is reportedly pissed off about the news, since his movie will lose tons of screens after a short period of exploitation. Nolan’s movie will take all the IMAX screens for the next three weeks, which will hurt Mission Impossible before it can grow a profit.

Getting More Screens For Mission Impossible 7

According to Business Insider, Tom Cruise has been pretty vocal about the news, and he has been going out of his way to personally make sure his movie will get more screens in other formats to compensate for the loss and set things straight. It’s not something any actor can pull off, and his producer status also allows him to make such decisions.

July Will Be Interesting!

With these two big movies hitting theaters in July alongside others like Insidious: The Red Door, Barbie, and Disney’s Haunted Mansion, summer is going to be busy. Every movie will have a tight window to outshine the others. Although, Mission Impossible is almost a guaranteed success, and Oppenheimer has huge expectations, Barbie is also one that will rake up dollars at the box office.

What will you go see this summer? Mission Impossible? Oppenheimer? Both, none? Let us know in the comments below.
