“Metal Gear?!” Yes, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, probably one of the most beloved episodes of the franchise which made the heyday of the Playstation is coming back. The announcement trailer was unveiled by Konami at the Playstation Showcase, and it doesn’t reveal much, but there is already information and plenty of questions surrounding this “new” project.

So, what can we expect from Metal Gear Solid ∆: Snake Eater following the trailer, and the current state of Konami? Discover the trailer below and keep reading to learn more about this upcoming remake.

Metal Gear Solid ∆: Snake Eater’s Trailer Shows Almost Nothing?

After watching this first announcement trailer, you’re probably thinking the same thing as us, it doesn’t show a lot about the game. The trailer is basically a long one-shot sequence showing a jungle’s ecosystem. It starts on ants, and it ends on the apex predator, in this case, Solid Snake. No release date either, and only the mention that the game will arrive on PS5. The way it’s said also implies it won’t be an exclusive title, similar to The Phantom Pain, which was released everywhere.

The MGS 3: Snake Eater Remake Will Reuse The Original Voice Cast

According to The Verge, this remake will stay true to the original PS2 release and will use the same voices to the dot. This means we’ll have Snake’s original voice actor David Hayter, instead of MGS V’s Kiefer Sutherland, which disappointed fans of the franchise at the time.

However, we’re still unsure if the new game will keep the script as is, or modify a few lines. Personally, we hope the remake keeps the lines exactly as they were, even though some are cheesy, as it was part of the game’s charm.

Hide-o Kojima

Konami hasn’t released a new Metal Gear game since Metal Gear Survive, the worst episode in the franchise, and for a bunch of reasons. The main one is that Hideo Kojima and the publisher didn’t end their partnerships on the best terms, with a beef that went as far as Konami removing the creator’s name from Metal Gear Solid V’s covers.

Financially, the Japanese publisher has been struggling ever since, and a new MGS game is mandatory for them to keep existing. Choosing to remake the most beloved episode appears like a safe bet for them, but without the main creator at the helm, it could very well fail.

Konami Must Modernize The Game Without Changing It

Remaking MGS 3 is a bigger challenge than it seems. Even if the story, and events remain unchanged, current games have evolved since 2004. The way we used to play can’t be done again, so we can imagine something closer to The Phantom Pain in terms of how Snake’s moves and interacts with the world. The issue is that it requires rethinking the level design of the game to account for the new possibilities, while keeping the game’s DNA without Kojima to guide things.

Let’s add to that, the unique gameplay features players expect to find, like the possibility to hunt and eat animals, which will require the next gen treatment. By that, we mean creating new animations and adding more possibilities if the game adopts the Phantom Pain approach. Moreover, MGS has always been at the forefront of graphical technology, and the first screenshot released shows a dated game, which is worrisome.

Are We Still In The Dream?

The trailer ends with a bit of nostalgia by playing the opening theme of the original game, but will Konami capture the lightning in a bottle experience provided by Metal Gear Solid 3 back in the day? We seriously doubt it. Given their current financial situation, the absence of Kojima and the available information, it looks like a cash grab to get back in the saddle.
