Extraction 2: Release Date, Plot, Expectations & More!

Extraction is a Netflix original few people expected, but the intricate choreography, camera work, and Chris Hemsworth’s performance made it the biggest premiere in the streaming service’s history. It was also probably due to the curiosity of seeing the actor play something other than Thor, a role which people still associate his face with.
Three years later, Hemsworth is back with Sam Hargrave directing, and the Russo brothers producing again. Can it capture lightning in a bottle once again?
Thor Wick: The Surprise of 2020
The first Extraction was an adaptation of Ciudad by Ande Parks and the Russo brothers, a graphic novel. The original book told the story of Tyler Rake, a black ops mercenary sent to save a kidnapped child in Ciudad Del Este, one of the worst cities in the world in terms of criminality in Paraguay. The Movie took the original premises and transported it to India, with the girl turned into a boy.
The Chris Hemsworth-starring movie featured John Wick-type action scenes with an emphasis on drawn-out one-shot sequences. However, the action appeared more brutal than in a John Wick movie, with less reliance on guns, and more hand-to-hand combat. The intensity of the action scenes, and the lead actor’s physical performance impressed, despite the shortcomings of the narration. The end of the first film saw Tyler Rake fall into water, seemingly dead, but as Hollywood taught us, heroes always survive in water.

Extraction 2: Bigger Means Better?
The second movie was unveiled a couple of months ago, and it picks up 9 months after the Mumbai events. Tyler Rake miraculously survived his wounds after being clinically dead, and he built himself back-up Rocky style. This new movie promises even more ambitious action sequences, Hemsworth even tweeted about a 21-minutes long one shot action scene, which probably refers to the prison scene shown in the first trailer. This scene gives out strong The Raid 2 vibes, but with more budget, explosion, and people.
Overall, the movie seems to have more budget in every action scene, with longer shots, epic set pieces, and unfortunately, not so well done green screens. Sam Hargrave, the director, still uses the visceral handheld style of shooting with shaky cams (but not too shaky), and brutal movements to hide the cuts between takes. It’s a style you’ll hate or love depending on your appreciation of movies like The Raid or Bourne films.

Extraction 2 Plot: You’ve Already Seen It
Let’s be honest, Extraction 2 is still a John Wick clone, and like the movie it imitates, and so many other clones, the plot isn’t deep or riveting. It’s all in the title, Tyler Rake is sent to a dangerous place to save someone (this time it’s a mother and her daughter), but things quickly escalate and get out of hand.
Given the latest trailer, Hemsworth’s character will be betrayed, and will have to fight his way out. Nothing revolutionary, but it’s enough as an excuse to shoot epic action. All the movie will once again rest on the shoulders of its cast, and more specifically its lead. Hemsworth has proved that he could do it, now what will make or break the movie is the balance between the credibility and “WOW” factor of the action scenes.

Extraction 2 Release Date & Expectations
Extraction 2 will be released on Netflix on June 16th, 2023. The service didn’t mention anything about a theatrical release, but it may announce a limited release before it hits the platform. Given the success of the first film, we can expect a big opening weekend, but a quick drop in viewership afterward. If you’ve enjoyed the first Extraction, you’ll be pleased, as it looks more of the same with bigger explosions and longer action scenes.
