Beetlejuice 2 Release Date Announced: All We Know So Far

Tim Burton is a director with a peculiar vision, one he couldn’t fully realize during his time as an artist at Disney, but that the world discovered later on when he became a director. Recently, his gothic style has made a big return with the Addams Family spin-off, Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega in the titular role.

Following the success of the show on Netflix, Warner Bros. is going to bank on the director’s past work and serve us more nostalgia, with the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel, no one expected. Here’s what we know so far about Beetlejuice 2.

Beetlejuice 2 Release Date & Cast

Beetlejuice 2 will release September 6th, 2024, the same day as the Blade reboot starring Maershala Ali (If it ever comes out at all, which we doubt). Warner Bros. has already announced the return of Michael Keaton as the infamously hilarious Beetlejuice has already been confirmed. Moreover, since Wednesday has been such a success, and Burton is still in the producer’s seat, Jenna Ortega is also set to star as the daughter of Wynona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz, after negotiations with the studio. The rest of the cast apparently includes Catherine O’Hara (Delia Deetz), and Justin Theroux, in an unrevealed part (probably Lydia Deetz husband).

However, there is no news about an eventual appearance of Geena Davis or Alec Baldwin, and some rumors mention a possible role for Johnny Depp, which is entirely possible given his friendship with Tim Burton.

The VFX Dilemma

The original movie came out in 1988, a time when practical effects were the only option. The first movie didn’t have the biggest budget ($15 million at the time), but it made up for it thanks to great writing, and creative ideas. However, similar to Blade Runner, the movie is now a cult-classic some people watch over and over. So this sequel will likely benefit from a bigger budget, at least $150 millions, we’d estimate. This creates an issue.

Tim Burton is stepping back as a director, but his last movies haven’t been the successes of his hey-day. The man who loved creating practical creatures has overindulged in bad CGI in his last productions, and if the past is anything to go by, Beetlejuice 2 may be a rubber-looking CGI fest. It’s a problem because most of the slapstick of the first film relied heavily on the weight of these effects. Adding CGI is not a bad thing, but we hope it won’t look like a Marvel production.

Box Office, Box Office, Box Office

‘Say his name three times and he appears’, that’s one of the many iconic lines of the first movie. This sequel comes out of nowhere, like ‘Betelgeuse’ (the character’s original name), and it’s clear that Warner Bros. is hoping for a big hit. It will benefit from the recent star power of Jenna Ortega, and the second coming of Michael Keaton, who’s also appearing in The Flash this year, reprising his Batman role. Keaton was the highlight of the first movie, and we hope he gets to show his comedy chops once again.
