Lady Gaga in Joker 2: Is Harley Quinn’s First Look Convincing?

The first Joker Movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Philips quickly became a cult-classic when it released in 2019, and it gathered several awards, which was particularly surprising for a comic book-related film. So, what do you do with such a massive success? You create a sequel and capitalize, while making people wait for it, of course.
Four years later, we’re finally getting news about Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel and some photos revealed the look of Harley Quinn, portrayed by Lady Gaga. Let’s have a look together and try to predict where the movie is going and if we’re going to like it or not. Also, leave your thoughts in the comments about it.

Lady Gaga in Joker 2 is Very Different From Margot Robbie
Harley Quinn is a character created by the Batman animated series of the 90s, and she quickly became popular for her complex relationship with the bat’s nemesis, the Joker. She was then portrayed by Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) in the horrendous 2016 Suicide Squad. Despite the film’s flaws and failure, her interpretation of the character was loved by fans and cosplayed to death ever since.
So, Robbie reprised the role for her own solo movie (which fell into oblivion), and James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, which was enough of a success to get the director the main seat at DC. However, Margot Robbie is an actress known for her Oscar worthy roles, and she has been recognized as one of the new Hollywood icons.
Lady Gaga, on the other hand, is a singer. She has international hits and collaborated with the best artists in the music industry. Even though she starred in several films, including a remake of A Star is Born, her performances have never been something remarkable. So, it’s going to be hard to top an actress who worked with Scorsese and Tarantino.

Lady Gaga’s First Look Reveal is Disappointing
The first on-set pictures revealed Lady Gaga’s look as Harley Quinn, and its… Well, we still have to see it on film, but it’s not brilliant. It honestly looked like a low-budget music video, and her make-up consists of two black lines on the eyes and that’s it. The costume is minimalistic and seems to voluntarily stray away from the comic book look (which would only be feasible in a horror movie to look good) and the Margot Robbie colorful look. The only thing that will remind you that you’re looking at Harley Quinn, is the fact that her pantyhose and corset have the iconic diamond symbols found in her anime costume.
So, it seems that Todd Philips and his team are going for a more realistic and sober look for this new interpretation, but it doesn’t look like something from the 70s like the first movie, and it’s less interesting than Joaquin Phoenix’s look in the first film.

A Bad Omen For Joker 2
The first Joker worked perfectly as a one-off, an isolated movie without a Batman just embracing the chaos of the Joker with an interesting (even though you see it coming from a mile away) twist, so the idea of a sequel was already bizarre to say the least. Now that we can see more of it, and that rumors about the film start to spread, it’s becoming even less exciting. The presence of Lady Gaga is not random and the movie will have musical pieces, which promises a lot of cringe and weird theatrical moments.
Furthermore, the fact that the movie is intended to target a specific demographic, while explicitly excluding others, is especially worrying. A movie should be intended for people based on their taste, not on who they are. However, that’s just our opinion, and we’d like to hear yours.
