2023 may just be the best year for gamers who enjoy Fighting Games. Usually, the biggest three franchises have one or two years between them, but in 2023 we might just see them all released. We’re talking about Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and Mortal Kombat 12.

Here’s everything we know about these upcoming games and why they got us excited.

Tekken 8: A Family Feud

The last Tekken game seemed to conclude the story of the Mishima family with the death of Heihachi, but there’s still the quarrel between Jin and his father Kazuya. The trailer revealed during Sony’s State of Play allowed us to learn more about the game. We already know it will run with the Unreal Engine 5, and that the gameplay may evolve.

Probably inspired by MK11, Tekken 8 is likely to feature more cinematic special combos, with the camera switching angles with close-ups and slo-mo. It was already present in the seventh entry, but it seems that Namco has turned it to 11 here. The game looks gorgeous, and we’ve seen a few characters like Jin, Kazuya, Paul, Law, Jack, King, Lars, and more surprisingly June Kazama.

Tekken 8 release date: TBA, but it’s likely to come out in 2023.

Street Fighter 6: Back To The Streets

Street Fighter is a franchise that suffered from repeating itself for far too long. The fourth entry was a massive hit after years of failures with 3D Fighting games, but Street Fighter V disappointed fans. The DLC trend didn’t help, especially with Capcom milking one of its biggest franchises. However, Street Fighter 6 seems to change things up.

Capcom has announced the game with trailers that show a stunning game, which is more realistic with particle effects, and such, but keeps the cartoon identity that worked so well with Street Fighter IV. The main addition is the World Tour mode, which is a solo campaign where you will control a new character in what seems to be an open-world. The multiplayer also has a new mode with the Battle Hub, which looks like the hub of an MMORPG. In any case, the communication conveys that the game will step away from the over the top situations of the previous games, and seems to go back to the streets.

Mortal Kombat 12: Maybe?

Mortal Kombat 11 was a success critically and commercially, and the 2019 game received too many awards to count, so everyone is waiting for the next game from Nether Realm. Recently, Ed Boon, creator of the franchise and head of Nether Realm answered a few questions on Twitter, and even though he couldn’t say it straight away he gave us a big hint on the next game, see the tweet below.

Apparently, the next project is coming out in 2023. It could be Injustice 3, but it’s unlikely, has the creator indicates news about MK12 are likely to arrive this year. So, it’s not such a big maybe, we’ll probably have a new Mortal Kombat by the end of this year.

Mortal Kombat 12 release date: 2023 (probably end of year).

More Fighting Games Coming Out In 2023

In 2023, we may see the return of the big 3 to the ring, but there are other fighting games coming out in 2023 like Blazing Strike or God of Rock. It’s a great year to be a fighting game fan, and we hope these games will bring back the trend of going toe-to-toe with friends sitting next to you, not miles away.
