Kamala Sohonie: Google Doodle Celebrates Kamala Sohonie, Pioneering Indian Biochemist

Today’s Google Doodle Celebrates the 112th birthday of Indian biochemist Dr. Kamala Sohonie. She was the first Indian woman to achieve a Ph.D. in a scientific field, and her work helped to pave the way for future generations of women in science.

Sohonie was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, in 1911. Her parents were both chemists, and she was encouraged to follow in their footsteps. She studied chemistry and physics at Bombay University, and graduated at the top of her class in 1933.

Sohonie was then admitted to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), but she faced discrimination from the institute’s director, who doubted the capabilities of women in science. Despite this, Sohonie persevered and completed her Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1938.

After graduating, Sohonie worked as a research scientist at the IISc, where she studied the nutritional benefits of legumes. She also conducted research on cytochrome C, an enzyme that is important for energy generation. In 1943, she published her findings in the journal Nature.

Sohonie’s work was groundbreaking, and she helped to advance the field of biochemistry. She was also a role model for women in science, and her determination and perseverance inspired others to follow in her footsteps.

The Google Doodle, which was created by artist Vrinda Zaveri, features a portrait of Sohonie surrounded by images of her work. The doodle is a fitting tribute to a pioneering scientist who broke down barriers and paved the way for future generations of women in science.

In addition to the Google Doodle, there are a number of other ways to celebrate Kamala Sohonie’s legacy.

  • You can read her biography, “Kamala Sohonie: A Life in Science,” by Meera Chandok.
  • You can visit the Kamala Sohonie Centre for Women’s Studies in Science and Technology at the Indian Institute of Science.
  • You can participate in the Kamala Sohonie Memorial Lecture, which is held annually at the IISc.

By learning more about Kamala Sohonie’s life and work, we can all be inspired to follow in her footsteps and pursue our dreams, regardless of gender.
