MAD Architects, an influential firm, has recently completed a groundbreaking project in China with the renovation of the Jiaxing Train Station, also known as the Train Station in the Forest. The firm meticulously rebuilt the historic train station, which was originally constructed in 1907, using old photographs as a reference. This ambitious project involved the use of 21,000 bricks made from mud sourced from a nearby lake to recreate the station’s original appearance.
The new train station is located in Southeast China and is part of a modern transport hub that is partially sunken underground. The innovative design features a glass facade that connects the new station building with the recreated 1907 station, creating a visually stunning and functional interior space. The station’s entry and exit platforms, waiting halls, and major transport and commercial functions are predominantly located underground, breaking with traditional concepts and giving rise to the unique ‘train station in the forest’ design.
In addition to its functional design, the Jiaxing Train Station also incorporates sustainable elements, such as solar panels to reduce the reliance on the power grid and ample use of glazing to maximize natural light. The project also focused on using locally sourced materials for the construction, highlighting a commitment to environmental sustainability.
Furthermore, the sunken design of the station has allowed for innovative landscaping above ground, with over 1,500 new trees planted to create a picturesque environment resembling rolling green hills. The site also connects to an existing park and features cultural and retail buildings, as well as a central lawn that will serve as an outdoor venue for concerts and art festivals.
With a projected capacity to host 5.28 million passengers per year by 2025, the Jiaxing Train Station represents a significant development in China’s transportation infrastructure. MAD Architects’ vision for a more humane and efficient station has resulted in a modern and sustainable transportation hub that honors the site’s historic significance and provides a seamless experience for travelers.
