Google Pixel 8: Concerns Over Price

Recent reports suggest that the upcoming Google Pixel 8 series smartphones could come with an unpleasant surprise when it comes to pricing. While the exact details are centered around European markets, it could potentially impact the prices of the Pixel 8 duo in the United States as well. The information comes from Dealabs Magazine, which claims to have obtained the pricing details for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in Europe.

According to the leaked information, the Pixel 8 Pro will reportedly start at 799 euros in Europe, which roughly translates to $855 based on current conversion rates. This marks a significant increase of 150 euros compared to the previous Pixel 7 in Europe and nearly a $250 jump when compared to the Pixel 7’s $599 sticker price. Even with currency parity, a $799 price tag for the Pixel 8 would still be a substantial $200 increase compared to its predecessor.

The Pixel 7 gained popularity for its standout design, feature-rich vanilla Android experience, and impressive cameras. However, it was the affordable $599 price that set it apart from competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S23 and iPhone 14. Frequent price cuts and deals made it an irresistible choice for many Android users. But if the rumors hold true, the Pixel 8’s expected price increase might not be as appealing to consumers, despite its rumored upgrades such as a refined design and faster chip.

The leaked information also suggests that the Pixel 8’s 256GB storage variant could be priced at 856 euros (approximately $915). Even with currency conversion, this would put it in the same price range as the current Pixel 7 Pro in the U.S. HotUKDeals also supports this pricing model for the Pixel 8 series.

On the Pro models front, Google seems to be entering the luxury domain previously reserved for Apple and Samsung. According to the leak, the Pixel 8 Pro’s base 128GB configuration could come with a hefty price tag of 1,099 euros (approximately $1,180). The previous Pixel 7 Pro started at 899 euros in Europe and $899 in the U.S. The leak also suggests that the top-tier 512GB model of the Pixel 8 Pro could be priced at 1,299 euros (close to $1,390).

So far, the rumored upgrades for the Pixel 8 Pro include an improved ultrawide camera, a new temperature sensor, and Google’s third-gen Tensor G3 processor. On the other hand, the Pixel 8 doesn’t seem to be receiving any significant upgrades and might not warrant the rumored price increase.

Of course, it’s important to take this information with a grain of salt as it is based on leaks and rumors. However, considering Google’s track record of leaked information and the potential release of Android 14 at the launch event, more concrete details might emerge soon.

The increasing price trends for the Pixel 8 series align with reports of Apple also considering a price hike for their iPhone 15 Pro. Both companies seem to be following a path that makes their phones less accessible to the masses, while emphasizing upgrades that might not always translate to meaningful improvements in real-world usage.

It’s unfortunate that just when the Pixel phones started to shine like the Nexus phones of the past, Google appears to be venturing into the realm of higher prices, where unpleasant sticker prices have become a common occurrence.

On a positive note, Google has provided an official sneak peek at the Pixel 8 lineup, showcasing the smartphones’ design and features. Despite the potential disappointment regarding pricing, it’s reassuring to know that the devices will still bring some excitement to the market.
