Everything you should know about Pressure Independent Control Valves

Pressure independent control valves are helpful in water or chemical factories, helping to improve system performance and optimize delta-T through reliable valve management. Suppose you install branded pressure independent control valves. In that case, you’ll find that they combine three functions into one device and have the unique benefit of always working at full stroke, even when the maximum adjustable flow setting is at its highest. The valves make it easier or eliminate the need to find the right actuator setting. It gives you better control and comfort. The simple max flow pre-setting and features like automatic balancing make on-site commissioning easy. Every valve and actuator made by Siemens is tested at the factory and put through rigorous lifecycle testing to make them more reliable. HVAC Integrated Tool (HIT) filters and calculators make it simple to size and choose the optimum control valve for your application. Siemens pressure independent control valves utilize fewer components and require less installation time.

About PICV

In simple words, pressure independent control valves or pressure independent balancing valves are one type of valve found in hydronic systems, which are water-based, and help provide heating and cooling in the building. These valves are a collection of distinct valves neatly merged into a single device. It further reduces design and installation time while also increasing system efficiency. They do two main things: they control how much liquid flows through a pipe and automatically adjust and compensate for changes in pressure in the system to keep control stable and reliable.

Uses of PICV

There are different areas where PICV is used, especially in hydronic heating and cooling systems. There are different applications, like heating and cooling systems. Others are-

  • Variable Flow Systems: You will have a variable speed pump that will supply an air handling unit, chilled beams, and fan coil units. They are used in conjunction with room controllers and actuators to provide temperature control for each unit.
  • In constant flow systems, where the main pump’s speed does not vary, three port control valves are typically utilized to bypass the units and employ PICVs as flow limiters. It allows the user to balance the system automatically and eliminates overflow in part load operation.

Reasons to use PICV

Pumps in a hydronic heating or cooling system increase pressure and circulate water. Some systems usually use pumps with different speeds to change the flow rate and, by extension, the system pressure. Control valves open and close to control where and how much water flows through the heat exchangers.

The issue is that as valves open and close and pumps increase and decrease their speed, the pressure in the system varies. It happens because the control valves attempt to limit how much water flows through them; as the supply pressure increases and decreases, so will the flow rate.

PICV achieves enough results because only the necessary amount of hot water (in GPM) and chilled water (in GPM) is given to the heating and cooling coils. When the CV is too high or too low, a standard 2-way control valve can cause overflow or underflow. It generates extra water to compensate for the pump’s inaccuracy, which raises pumping costs.

Why buy top-quality PICV?

When you buy top quality pressure independent balancing valves, you will find that it combines three functions. The primary distinction is that the flow limiter of the field adjustable is independent of the valve stroke. As a result, the valve stroke is lowered by decreasing the flow. Since the pressure independent control valve is independent of the valve stroke, you can control it regardless of the pressure independent control valve’s maximum flow setting.
