How to get rid of “Just Another WordPress Site” taglines

When you first install Wordpress on your website, you’ll find some placeholder content in place, including your website’s name and tagline.

For the tagline, WordPress uses “Just Another WordPress Site” as the placeholder and it’s important that you get rid of this as soon as possible to avoid being stuck with it longer than you need to be! To do that, we need to edit your tagline.

You can find your website’s tagline in two different places on your WordPress dashboard and both will allow you to get rid of “Just Another WordPress Site” and replace it with something relevant to your website!

How to edit your tagline with WordPress Customiser

The first place you can find and edit your tagline is under Appearances > Customise.

Once the WordPress Customiser has loaded up, click on Site Identity and here you will find the Tagline setting. All you need to do is remove the default tagline and replace it with something relevant to your website.

Depending on the theme you have installed on your WordPress website, you may not have the above options in your WordPress Customiser settings. If that is the case for you then don’t worry, there’s another option!

How to edit your tagline with WordPress Settings

This second option to get rid of “Just Another WordPress Site” from your tagline should work for all WordPress websites.

On the WordPress Dashboard, scroll down to Settings > General.

As you can see, you can also edit your Site Title and Tagline here so you can go ahead and replace whatever you need. Make sure you click save when you’re done!

If you don’t get rid of this tagline quickly fairly soon after you start working on your website then you may find your website is indexed with the tagline still in place.

So even if you change or remove the default tagline at a later date, you may still see it show up in Google’s search results when searching for your website. You’re going to need to take an extra step to totally remove the pesky default tagline!

How to remove “Just Another WordPress Site” from Google

Unfortunately, we can’t control the information displayed in Google searches the same way we can with your website. This means that although there is a fix, it’s not immediate and you’ll have to wait for Google Bots to catch up to the change.

The quickest way to get Google Bots to update their records from your website is to head to Google Search Console and resubmit your sitemap.

If you’re unsure on your sitemap URL, your SEO plugin will have generated this for you and you can find it in your sitemap settings.

If you don’t have an SEO plugin then I recommend installing one (I use RankMath SEO for myself and all my SEO clients) and having the plugin submit your sitemap to Google Search Console.

Alternatively, if you use RankMath SEO you can select Instant Indexing to have this update pushed through to Google.

After that, I recommend checking Google’s search results for your website every few days until you see that the update has been made.
