"BMW Prepares to Introduce an Entry-Level Electric Vehicle as the Successor to the Retired i3"

BMW Explores Entry-Level Electric Model, Straying from Controversial Design  BMW, renowned for its striking designs, is reportedly venturing into new territory with a successor to the beloved i3. This time, the focus is on delivering a compact electric entry-level model, minus the polarizing aesthetics that characterized the i3.

The prospect of a BMW with a more universally appealing design might sound like a departure from the brand's recent design philosophy. However, according to reports from Automobilwoche, that's precisely what BMW is considering. The automaker is contemplating the creation of what they refer to as an 'Einstiegsstromer,' an affordable, entry-level electric model.

Frank Weber, BMW's Development Chief, shared insights with the German trade magazine, highlighting the importance of providing customers with accessible entry points to the BMW brand. Weber stated, "BMW should definitely come up with an affordable, compact model again." He emphasized that BMW is actively evaluating how such an entry-level model could seamlessly fit into the Neue Klasse model family.

The 'Neue Klasse' represents a new generation of electric models built on a dedicated electric platform. This marks a departure from BMW's current approach, where electric i models are based on existing platforms, often using familiar bodies and interiors. The first production vehicle from the 'New Class' is slated for 2025, resembling a 3-series model (and possibly an evolved i3), followed by an SUV. Subsequent models will join the lineup, including a compact hatchback.  In contrast to the i3, a beloved but somewhat divisive model, the new compact electric vehicle aims to present a different proposition: compact, without the idiosyncrasies that divided opinions.

This strategy inevitably aligns with the other famous BMW brand, Mini. Past examples have shown that coexistence is possible. For instance, the Mini Countryman and the BMW X1 share technical foundations, and BMW still offers the petrol-fueled 1-series alongside its electric offerings.  As Frank Weber pointed out, an entry-level model is a strategic way to attract and retain customers. Those who embrace the entry-level Neue Klasse might naturally consider moving up to larger, more upscale models within the same brand, further solidifying their connection with the BMW experience. The future of BMW's electric lineup is evolving, promising fresh, accessible options for a broader range of drivers.
