BMW and Great Wall Motor Unveil All-New Electric Mini Cooper from Their Joint Venture

Spotlight Automotive's manufacturing facility in Zhangjiagang, China, marked a significant milestone on October 14 as the first units of the all-new Electric Mini Cooper rolled off the assembly line. This facility is the result of a bold collaboration between BMW and Great Wall Motor (GWM), which was initiated in 2019.

The partnership, fueled by a substantial investment of RMB 1.7 billion (approximately €216.84 million), stands out for its unique approach. While BMW and GWM are jointly developing and manufacturing these electric Minis, they plan to sell them through their individual sales channels, defying the traditional concept of a joint venture.

The plant's production capacity is set to reach up to 160,000 vehicles annually, with a focus on two pure electric Mini models. In addition to the three-door Mini Cooper, the facility has plans to introduce a compact Mini crossover to cater to both international and Chinese customers.

The all-new electric Mini Cooper maintains its iconic design cues, with signature round headlights and an oval front grille. The rear features triangular tail lights, offering a contemporary twist on the classic Union Jack lights seen in previous models.

Customers will have two enticing options: the Mini Cooper E, equipped with a 135 kW electric motor and a 40.7 Kwh Battery Pack, and the sportier Mini Cooper SE, featuring a front 160 kW/330 Nm electric motor and a 54.2 kWh battery pack. The SE accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a quick 6.7 seconds and offers a maximum cruising range of 402 km (WLTP). Charging convenience is assured with support for 11 kW AC charging and rapid 95 kW DC fast charging for both models.

The eagerly anticipated all-electric Mini Cooper is poised for a global and Chinese market debut, scheduled for early 2024, making it just a few months away from gracing the roads. This collaboration between BMW and GWM signifies a significant step forward in the electric vehicle landscape.
