Ensure pre-mixes not sold as health or energy drinks: FSSAI to e-firms

The country’s peak food safety and security regulatory authority has asked websites marketing foodstuff to ensure that drinks or pre-mixes such as Bournvita, Complan and Horlicks are not available under the ‘health drink’ or ‘power drink’ category.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) claimed this will certainly guarantee that individuals are not misled.

This will apply to all websites and apps that sell food products such as food shipment applications like Swiggy or Zomato, grocery store distribution applications such as Blinkit or Zepto, along with general shopping websites such as Amazon.

“This rehabilitative activity aims to enhance clarity and transparency regarding the nature and useful residential or commercial properties of the products, making certain that consumers can make educated selections without encountering deceptive details,” FSSAI said in a statement.

FSSAI claimed these are licensed as proprietary foods as there is no classification called health and wellness beverages under the act that regulates food in the country.

“Proprietary products are essentially those that use components for which security requirements exist in the regulation, however except the formulation all at once. As there is no category called wellness beverages, the drinks must not be categorised because of this on sites due to the fact that it can misguide individuals,” said an authorities.
