Two Goa firms get closure notice over plastic waste rules

Two Goa-based business establishments have been issued with a “show cause” notice by the Central Pollution Control Board for not complying with the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016

The CPCB issued a notice of show cause to 688 entities in India, including two in Goa. These entities were notified of the following actions taken: closing operations of the unit; and charging environmental compensation due to non-compliance with the provisions of the Plastic Waste Management Rules.

Swanson Plastics India Pvt Ltd, Honda Sattari; and GKB Vision Pvt Ltd, Pilerne Industrial Estate are both served with a show cause notice.

According to the rule, the environmental compensation payable for failure to meet EPR targets is Rs 5000/tonne.

Show Cause Notices are sent to all producers, importers, Brand owners, and Plastic waste processors involved in recycling and industrial composting who have not registered themselves on the CPCB’s centralized Extended Producers Responsibility portal, as informed by the Union Ministry for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Units were required to register before November 30, 2023.

You may recall that on 16 February 2022, the Ministry issued guidelines for extended producer responsibility for plastic packaging.

The guidelines mandated that certain entities register on the EPR Portal. They were prohibited from carrying out any business without this registration. The portal also prohibited them from doing business with entities not registered.
