Introduction: In a shocking development, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), in collaboration with the Madhya Pradesh State Drug Controllers, has taken decisive action against pharmaceutical company Riemann Labs. The firm has been ordered to immediately cease production of its Cough Syrup, Naturcold, which has been tragically linked to the deaths of children in Cameroon. The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a concerning alert after discovering “unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol as contaminants” in the cough syrup supplied to Cameroon.

The Investigation: Prompted by the WHO’s alert on July 19, CDSCO and the State Drug Controllers of Madhya Pradesh conducted a joint inspection at M/s Riemann Labs in Indore. The findings were deeply troubling, prompting immediate action to safeguard public health.

The Banning Order: Minister of State for Health, Bharati Pravin Pawar, conveyed the government’s response in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of parliament. Following the investigation’s outcome, the State Drugs Controller MP directed Riemann Labs to halt all manufacturing activities related to the cough syrup.

The Contaminated Product: Naturcold, the cough syrup in question, contained a combination of paracetamol, phenylephrine hydrochloride, and chlorpheniramine maleate, listed as active ingredients. Typically used to relieve symptoms associated with the flu, common cold, and allergic rhinitis, this particular batch of Naturcold was found to have dangerous levels of diethylene glycol as contaminants. The substance poses severe health risks, especially for children.

Public Safety First: The government’s swift action in banning the manufacturing of the cough syrup underscores its commitment to public safety and health. With the alarming deaths reported in Cameroon, it became imperative to prevent any further distribution of the hazardous product.
