One of my favorite things about the Android OS is the customization that users get right out of the box. From live wallpapers to custom ROMs, the Android universe really offers tons of customization options. One customization feature that is missing on certain phones is how to change Fonts on Android.
If you’ve tried different launchers and themes, but are still not able to make the interface perfect according to your preferences, then changing fonts is what you need. Some of you might think that fonts aren’t such an important part, but you’ll be surprised at how significantly they can change the interface on your phone. It even makes messaging your friends more fun.
If you’ve used the Symbian OS before, then I’m sure you might have heard about changing fonts and it was quite easy back then. If you haven’t come across any way for changing fonts on your Android phone, then continue reading to find out how to change fonts on Android.
Tip
Except for Method 1, you should create a backup of your existing fonts. Third party apps will change your system files so make sure that you either create a backup of your fonts or create a full backup of your device through Recovery.
Method 1: Default Way For LG And Samsung
The latest LG and Samsung devices come pre-loaded with the customizable fonts feature and you can easily change the fonts using the Settings app. You don’t need to install any third-party app or have root access on your device to use this feature.
LG Phones
This feature is available on some of the latest Android phones, such as LG G2 and G Flex.
Step 1
Open the Settings app and tap on Display.
Step 2
Scroll down and select the Font type option.
Step 3
Select your preferred font. That’s it! You have successfully changed the font on your LG phone.
Step 4
If you want additional fonts, you can download them from the LG SmartWorld app.
Samsung Phones
This feature is available on the latest Samsung smartphones, such as the Galaxy S4 and S5.
Step 1
Open the Settings app, go to the My device tab and select Display.
Step 2
Tap on Font style.
Step 3
Select your desired font. That’s it!

To get more fonts, tap on the Get fonts online button.
Method 2: iFont
iFont is one of my favorite apps when it comes to changing fonts and if you’re looking for a simple app that shows you how to change fonts on Android, then this is probably one of the best options. From different languages to different styles, you are likely to find almost all sorts of fonts in this particular app.
Changing the fonts only takes a couple of seconds and your phone doesn’t even require a reboot. iFont works on most Samsung smartphones, such as the S3 and Note 2, without root access. The app should also work on devices from other manufactures, but you’ll need root access. Aside from that, the app also lets you change the size and compare fonts side-by-side.
Step 1
Download and install the iFont app on your Android phone. You can get the app through the Google Play button below.
Step 2
Open the app, go to the Online tab and select the font that you like.
Step 3
Tap on the Download button.
Step 4
Tap on the Set button. You can also use the Preview and Compare tabs to check how that font would look like on your phone.
Method 3: Font Installer
Font Installer is another popular app on the Google Play Store that lets you change the fonts on your phone. Like Method 2, this app also helps you learn how to change fonts on Android. Font Installer also lets you backup, preview and install fonts from your SD card. The app should work on most Android devices, but you’ll need root access in order to use it.
Step 1
Download and install Font Installer on your Android device. You can get the app through the Google Play button below.
Step 2
Open the app and tap on the Server tab.
Step 3
Navigate through the fonts and tap on the font that you like.
Step 4
Tap on Preview in the pop-up to get a preview of the font.
Step 5
Tap on Install to set the font. Wait for this process to complete and your device will reboot once the process is successful.
Step 6
If you want to set your own TTF font, go to the Local tab and navigate to where the TTF is located.
Step 7
Tap on the TTF file and press Install to set the font. That’s it!
Method 4: Manual Way
For people who want to take matters into their own hands, there is a manual way that you can use to change fonts on your Android device. This is basically how the fonts are being changed in most font changing apps.
However, this method should be used with caution as you’ll be modifying system files on your own so making a backup would be the smart thing to do. You’ll need root access in order to use this method as well. Also, you’ll need to your custom fonts in the TTF file extension.
Step 1
Download and install Root Explorer if you don’t already have it installed on your phone. You can get it through the Google Play button below.
Step 2
Go to the Sytem/fonts directory using Root Explorer. You should now see various TTF files. The one we’re looking for is Roboto-Regular.ttf. Changing this font will bring the greatest result and most font changers usually focus on this file. The other TTF files are there for different areas, such as your Clock and Lockscreen. You can change them as well if you want.
Step 3
Rename your custom TTF font file to Roboto-Regular.ttf. If you want to change other fonts as well, create copies of the same font and rename them to different names. For example, if there are 10 different font files with different names, you need to make 10 copies of your custom font and rename each copy to match the 10 files already present in your phone.
Step 4
Once you have renamed your font files, move them to the System/fonts directory. Your existing fonts will be replaced by these new copies that you made.
Step 5
Long press on each new file, tap on Permissions and make sure the permissions look exactly like the image below. Do this for all the files that you replaced.
Step 6
Reboot your phone. That’s it! You have successfully changed your fonts.
Method 5: Flashing Through Recovery
If you’ve tried everything else and still cannot change your fonts, then this is where you learn how to change fonts on Android. If you have some experience in flashing custom ROMs or mods through recoveries, then this should be a piece of cake for you. For users who haven’t done this before, you’ll need a custom recovery in order to flash the font zip files.
This particular method doesn’t add any new fonts in your phone, but it simply replaces your current font. It includes 355 different zip files, meaning 355 separate fonts that you can install. This method should work with most devices running the Android ICS or greater.
Step 1
Download the 355 fonts package on your PC. You can download the package here. Extract the package and you’ll find various zip folders. Each zip folder will have a separate font.
Step 2
Transfer your desired font’s zip folder to your phone’s root directory. For example, if you want to install the Existence font, transfer the Font_Existence.zip file to your phone’s root directory.
Step 3
Switch off your phone and boot into recovery. This will be different depending on the device and custom recovery that you’re using, but typically its either the Volume Up and Power buttons combination or Volume Down and Power buttons combination.
Step 4
Use the Volume keys to navigate to Install zip from sdcard and select it using the Power button.
Step 5
Navigate to the zip file that you transferred to your phone earlier and select it using the Power button.
Step 6
Select Yes using the Power button and wait for your phone to flash the zip file.
Step 7
Go to Advanced and select Wipe dalvik cache.
Step 8
Select the Reboot system now option. Your phone will now reboot with the new font.
