Things That May Damage Your MacBook

Tags: macbook

For many people, Macbook is among their most expensive gadgets, but they may still damage it accidentally. Fortunately, you can learn from the past mistakes of MacBook owners to make yours long-lasting. Despite its excellent construction and overall high quality, your MacBook isn’t indestructible. There are different things that can damage your MacBook and here are the likeliest ones:

Scratched surface

You may accidentally scratch your MacBook with sharp jewellery or office stationery. If you have a MacBook with an aluminium body, you may scratch it easily compared to other laptop models. The MacBook may lose its shine if you clean it regularly with a rough, dry or rough bristled brush. Avoid wearing anything metallic like a ring, bracelet or wristwatch when typing. Make sure to place your MacBook on a smooth surface, without any rough objects nearby. If you have a MacBook with a space grey colour, scratches will be more visible than with other colour options.

Harsh cleaning agent

Your MacBook has anodized aluminium chassis that is designed for resistance to corrosion and better durability. However, you could blemish or damage the surface with harsh cleaning products with abrasives, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia or acetone. These substances will strip the protective anodized coating, exposing the aluminium surface below to discolouration. If you want to clean up the surface, it is recommended to use a mild cleaning solution and a slightly damp soft, lint-free cloth.

Overheating

MacBook is carefully designed to prevent internal overheating, even when used at peak performance. But you may still overheat your MacBook when you leave it in a hot car. This may cause the display to warp and the battery to swell.

Spilt liquids

If you have the habit of sipping a cup of coffee while checking your email and social media, there is an obvious risk of spilling the sticky, hot liquid on the keyboard. Unlike your iPhone, MacBook isn’t water-resistant. When water goes into the keyboard, it may short-circuit the internal components. A tiny spill may not immediately damage your MacBook, but it could rust the connections and completely break the motherboard after a few weeks or months.

Excessive pressure

Many students crack the MacBook after putting thick, heavy books on it. If you sleep beside your MacBook, it is easy to roll onto it unknowingly. The more robust MacBook Pro may survive the ordeal, but the thin MacBook Air is much more fragile and it will crack easily. Possible damages may include damaged hinges, cracked display or cracked motherboard. Whatever you do, you should avoid exerting undue pressure on the device.

Dropping it

Despite the all-metal unibody design, your MacBook could still be damaged by accidental drops. It could become badly dented, cracking delicate components inside the case. Although your MacBook still works, any dent on the thin chassis may make it impossible to fully close the lid. Your MacBook will be completely unusable if the display is cracked after a drop. For older MacBook with hard drives, you may risk losing your data. Even if you bring your MacBook to an experienced, licensed technician, it could be damaged beyond repair.
