What is GPT-4? Everything you need to know about it

The internet went wild on March 14, 2023, when Openai, a Microsoft-backed AI behemoth, unveiled GPT-4, latest incarnation of powerful artificial intelligence model that powered the immensely popular ChatGPT.

What is GPT-4?

GPT-4 is advertised as bigger, faster, and more accurate than ChatGPT. With its multimodal capabilities, it can generate output in response to both visual and textual cues. However, this doesn’t make GPT-4 like Google Lens since Lens only scans for text, but GPT-4 reads and analyses photos.  To illustrate, if you show gpt-4 a picture of the inside of your wardrobe, it will recommend possible outfits for you to wear.

How is GPT-4 better than GPT-3.5?

The company asserts that GPT-4 is superior to its predecessors in creativity, collaboration, and the ability to solve complex challenges.

GPT-3 and GPT-3.5 were text-only machine learning algorithms. Thus, users had to type in their requests. Unlike the text-only ChatGPT powered by GPT-3.5, GPT-4 can now take image inputs to produce requests. Nevertheless, this is merely the top of the iceberg. We explain the new OpenAI language model and its advantages over its predecessor as well as the audiences that will have access to it.

What are the capabilities of GPT-4?

GPT-4 aced the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), the Uniform Bar Exam (BAR) for lawyers in the United States, LSAT and SAT Math. Not only can GPT-4 calculate taxes, but a demonstration also showed that it could learn a user’s creative writing style by observing their past work and solve reasoning tasks by scheduling a meeting among three busy people.

It can also process texts longer than 25,000 characters, expanding its application to fields such as content production, document analysis, and in-depth discussions.

GPT-4 is more linguistically versatile; it correctly answered thousands of multiple-choice questions in 26 languages globally, including Telugu, with an accuracy of 71.4%. This will enable the creation of Chatbots in these languages.

What are the limitations of GPT-4?

Despite advances, OpenAI is still not as competent as humans in many practical contexts. Inaccuracies, often called “hallucination”, are still evident in GPT-4.

OpenAI concluded that, when paired with a human editor, GPT-4 can compete with human propagandists in several fields, including the creation of rivalry amongst entities.

Who can access GPT-4?

GPt-4 has not been made publicly available just yet, but a $20 monthly ChatGPT Plus subscription will grant you instant access. However, ChatGPT’s free tier, which runs on GPT-3.5, is still available for free.

If you don’t want to pay, there is an “unofficial” way to start using GPT-4 right away. Microsoft claims that the new Bing search interface, powered by GPT-4, is already live at bing.com/chat.

Other organizations that have implemented GPT-4 include Duolingo and ed-tech giant Khan Academy.

OpenAI acknowledges that GPT-4 has flaws and that the business is working to fix them.
