The T20 World Cup 2022: Everything You Need to Know

International Cricket started as a 6-day test match between Australia and England in the 19th century at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Since then, cricket has been evolving.

Spectators wanted a short version of the cricket game in the 70s. So, ICC introduced one-day international matches.

But the demand for a more compact version of a cricket game has brought us the T20 version of the game. It’s exciting and full of fun.

That’s why seven T20 World Cup tournaments have been played as of this date. Now, every cricket fan is waiting for the eighth edition, which will start on the 16th of October, 2022.

Whether you want to know fixtures, squads, venues, reserve days, or anything related to T20 World Cup 2022, this blog post is more than enough for it.

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will commence on the 16th of October at Kardinia Park, Geelong, and will continue to thrill viewers until the 13th of November, when the final will be played in MCG, Melbourne.

Let’s see what happens this time.

The Tournament Format

T20 World Cup 2022 will be the eighth ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and will be played by 16 teams in a three-stage competition.

The host, Australia, already has secured its spot due to its win in T20 World Cup 2021. Yet, 86 teams will compete for the remaining 15 spots.

Eight spots in ICC T20 World Cup 2022 will be filled by the top eight teams of the previous T20 world cup, which are:

  • Afghanistan
  • Australia
  • Bangladesh
  • England
  • India
  • New Zealand
  • Pakistan
  • South Africa

These teams will also qualify for the super 12 without playing in the group stage.

After Group A and Group B’s matches, the remaining four teams for the super 12 will be decided.

The tournament will have three stages. First, eight teams in two groups will play, and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the super 12.

The super 12 matches will decide the top four teams that will play in the knockout stage.

There will be three matches in the knockout stage: two semi-finals and one final.

The final will decide the next champion.

Four teams for the group stage are decided by their performance in the previous ICC T20 World Cup, and these teams are:

  • Namibia
  • Scotland
  • Sri Lanka
  • West Indies

The other four teams will come from 86 international teams and will qualify through qualifying matches, and tournaments played in the previous year.

Here are the qualified teams.

  • UAE
  • Netherlands
  • Zimbabwe

Super 12 stage teams

Semi-finalists will be decided on a points basis, and the final will be played between the winners of the semi-finals.

Points System

Before going to T20 World Cup 2022 schedule, it is necessary to know about the point system of the T20 World Cup 2022.

The point rules are simple. Every team qualifies for the next round based on points except for the knockout stage.

  • On a win, every team will get 2 points.
  • If the match is tied, abandoned, or provides no result, both teams will get 1 point.
  • On a loss, every team will get 0 points.

If the points of the two teams come out equal before qualifying for the next round, the team with the high run rate will progress to the next round.

Are There Reserve Days?

Reserve days are the dates that are decided in case of any match is abandoned due to any reason, such as rain, low light, terrorism, or more.

T20 World Cup 2022 does not have reserve days for the group stage and super 12 stage matches. If anything happens that delays the match, both teams will be given one point each.

However, ICC has reserved days for the semi-finals and finals. These matches will be played on reserve days in case of a delay due to any reason.

Hot Favorite Teams for T20 World Cup 2022

Australia

Australia had not won a T20 World while being an ODI world champion five times until 2021, when it took the crown.

This year, Australia will be defending its title on its home turf, which will be the biggest advantage. Also, team Australia is filled with hard hitters and economy bowlers. That’s why experts are predicting Australia’s win in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Moreover, Australia’s track record on home ground is magnificent. It has won 31 T20 Matches from 51 played.

India

India won the first T20 World Cup in 2007 and was a finalist in 2014. Due to the IPL, India always has a long line of hard hitters and a strong batting attack.

Apart from a poor performance in the Asia Cup, India is in full form to take the crown in Australia.

However, the injury of Bhumra will lower the intensity of the Indian bowling attack. But the replacement, M. Shami, is also a versatile bowler who performs well in T20.

England

England is in full form for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and has played well with South Africa, Pakistan, and New Zealand in the recent series.

England’s bowling attack has a pace battery attack, and its hitters are waiting for the tournament to begin.

However, England’s track record in Australia is not good. It has only won a single T20 match on Australian soil.

Pakistan

Pakistan has been the winner of the T20 World Cup once and has been a runner-up once. Recently, Pakistan played well in the Asia cup. But lost in the final to Sri Lanka in a breathtaking match.

Pakistani opening couple scored consistently in T20 matches and chased a total of 200+ in a match against England in a recent series.

Pakistan is known as an unpredictable team with volatile nature of performance. That’s why experts consider Pakistan one of the favorite teams for this world cup.

Favorite Players for T20 World Cup 2022

Jose Butler

Although Jose butler is not present in the top ten ICC Men’s T20 Batsman Ranking, he is the best T20 batter for England. Also, he is the most sensible batter in England’s team who can shake the confidence of any bowler.

He performed very well in the last IPL season, and he scored three centuries the last year.

In the last T20 World Cup, Jose butler scored an average of 89 runs per inning.

Babar Azam

Babar Azam is the top-ranked batter in ICC Men’s T20 Batsman Ranking. His batting style is versatile, and he can play shots all around the ground.

No matter how tough the situation is, Babar Azam never loses his nerves and plays solidly.

Recently, Babar Azam outclassed England’s batting and scored a maiden century while chasing a score over 200.

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya is the hot favorite all-rounder for this world cup. He can hit the ball outside the ground and take wickets when they are needed.

India surely will rely on him to score wins against opponents.

Wanindu Hasaranga

Wanindu Hasaranga has quietly entered the scene and developed into one of the best all-rounders in the shortest format of cricket, despite the issues that Sri Lankan cricket has faced over the years.

He is ranked among the top 10 all-rounders in the ICC’s T20 rankings and was the World Cup of 2021’s best wicket-taker.

Because of how difficult it is to pick his deliveries off the surface, he has had great success in T20 cricket.

Hasaranga will undoubtedly supply the majority of Sri Lanka’s highlights if they need to make an impression at the ICC T20 World Cup in 2022.
