How to link your lock screen to a Focus mode with iOS 16

Widgets! Fonts and colors have been updated! Wallpaper with emojis! The iPhone Lock Screen is finally getting the attention it deserves in iOS 16.

Apple’s recent Lock Screen changes are more than just cosmetic, as you can now link your lock screen to different focus modes. That is, the settings you configure for each mode — Do Not Disturb, Driving, Personal, Sleep, and Work — are reflected in what appears on your lock screen.

In the current version of iOS, you can customize the settings for the various focus modes. With this update, however, you will be able to switch modes directly from your lock screen and vice versa. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Press and hold the lock screen to open screen settings.

This is also where you can create and customize wallpaper and add widgets.

  1. Tap the Focus icon.

This is located near the bottom center of the screen. When you tap this icon, a window with all of the Focus modes will appear. If you haven’t already, scroll all the way down and tap “Focus Settings” to configure them.

  1. Link your Focus mode.

Tap “x” to close the window after selecting which Focus mode you want to link to the lock screen. To complete the changes, tap the wallpaper again.
