Sonic sets scene at revamped Parramatta Park!

Arthur Phillip Park in Northmead is set to unveil its new look with a bang, thanks to a $1.24 million makeover, and the City of Parramatta is celebrating with a free outdoor cinema event. The park’s grand reopening on Friday, 19 April, from 4 to 9pm, coincides with the school holidays, providing perfect timing for families looking for entertainment and outdoor fun.

Visitors can catch a free screening of “Sonic the Hedgehog (2022)” as the sun sets, amidst a festive atmosphere complete with popcorn, live music, children’s workshops, roving entertainment, and a variety of food and drink options. The renovation boasts a bigger playground, an accessible play space, a nature play area, a half-court basketball area, a climbing tower, and more picnic and BBQ spots, enhanced by new solar pathway lighting, improved landscaping, and additional trees to provide ample shade.

Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber expressed his enthusiasm for the outdoor cinema event, highlighting it as an ideal start to the school holidays, offering families a chance to experience the park’s enhancements. He acknowledged the community’s contribution to the park’s redesign, emphasizing the addition of more shaded and picnic areas to meet their needs. The park now promises year-round outdoor enjoyment for local schools, sports groups, and residents.

The upgrade is part of the Public Spaces Legacy Program, with the NSW Government contributing $1.15 million of the total funds. Planning and Public Spaces Minister Paul Scully remarked on the transformation of Arthur Phillip Park into a splendid area for families and local sports groups, underlining the government’s commitment to supporting Parramatta’s growth with necessary infrastructure.

Local MP Donna Davis praised the upgrades for making the park safer and more accessible, highlighting the community’s anticipation of the future stages of the Arthur Phillip Master Plan. As the park reopens, it stands as a testament to community-driven development and the shared goal of enhancing public spaces for the enjoyment of all.
