Visual journey: NGV transforms into vibrant Indian oasis

The Indian Community Day at the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) in Melbourne is a vibrant celebration of Indian culture, art, and heritage. The event showcased the rich diversity and traditions of the Indian community while fostering cultural exchange and understanding. Held for the second time this year, it was a day filled with a variety of engaging activities and performances that highlight different aspects of Indian culture.

Visitors hads the opportunity to immerse themselves in traditional music and dance performances, showcasing various classical and folk dance forms from different regions of India. The rhythmic beats of traditional Indian music, accompanied by mesmerising dance movements, created a lively and festive atmosphere.

Art plays a significant role in Indian Community Day, with exhibitions featuring works by Indian artists that encompass a wide range of styles and themes. From traditional paintings and sculptures to contemporary installations, the artworks offer insights into India’s artistic heritage and its modern expressions.

Food plays a central role in any Indian celebration, and Indian Community Day is no exception. Evoking the scents and sounds of the streets of India, Australia-Bengali chef and MasterChef finalist, Kishwar Chowdhury created two bespoke dishes especially for Indian Community Day available from Gallery Kitchen and Great Hall.

In addition to the cultural and artistic experiences, Indian Community Day was a platform for community organisations and individuals to come together and share their stories, traditions, and achievements. It fosters connections within the Indian community and encourages dialogue and understanding with the wider community of Melbourne.
