COVID surges to nearly 30%, healthcare settings adjusted

A rise in Covid cases has triggered a healthcare setting adjustment which could see leave cancelled for workers in the sector.

The number of people in Victorian hospitals with COVID-19 has surged to nearly 30 per cent according to figures from the Department of Health.

Health officials said the increase in case numbers is being driven by new Omicron subvariants that are more vaccine evasive and due to waning immunity in the community.

In response to the increased demand for health services, officials lifted the system response framework to Stage Three last week.

This could result in leave being cancelled for hospital staff, increased telehealth appointments and additional meetings to discuss case management.

A Department of Health spokesperson noted that Stage Three did not automatically trigger changes to elective surgery.

Aged cared dealing with rise in cases

Aged care facilities are seeing a rise in COVID cases in the lead up to Christmas.

Experts in the sector say they are hopeful for a more normal holiday season, three years into the pandemic, with smaller outbreaks and experience learned from recent years.

Data from the federal government shows there were deaths attributed to COVID across 15 aged care facilities in Victoria in the week to December 1.

Tom Symondson, CEO of the Aged and Community Care Providers Association, said the numbers are a reminder of the ongoing impact of the pandemic.

Care facilities are asking families to continue adhering to rules when visiting, to help keep residents safe from the virus.

Energy talks delayed with PM COVID diagnosis

Energy crisis talks at the National Cabinet meeting scheduled for this week, have been delayed after the Prime Minister contracted COVID.

Anthony Albanese confirmed a positive COVID test result in a statement on Monday afternoon and said he would continue to work from home.

The Prime Minister had been due to host Premiers and Territory leaders at Kirribilli House on Tuesday night before a series of briefings and the National Cabinet meeting.

The meeting between federal and state leaders was intending to strike a deal on rising power prices.
