Stroke In India: Stroke has become the second biggest cause of death in India. About 1,85,000 Stroke cases are being reported every year in India. There is a case of stroke in every 40 seconds, while there is one death due to stroke every 4 minutes. This shocking figure of deaths due to stroke is increasing in India. At the same time, especially the young and middle-aged people of India are coming in its grip. This information has been given by Padmashree Dr (Professor) MV Padma Srivastava of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi.

The country’s renowned neurologist Srivastava, who reached Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on the occasion of International Women’s Day, said that according to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD), India has the highest burden of stroke with 68.6 per cent incidence of stroke. Death occurs in 70.9 percent of stroke cases, while disability occurs in 77.7 percent of cases. These figures are worrying for India. Another alarming and important finding of the GBD 2010 Stroke Project states that 5.2 million ie about 31 percent of stroke cases occur in children under the age of 20 years. The burden of stroke is the highest in India and young and middle-aged people are coming in its grip.

Dr. Srivastava said that India is still far behind in terms of stroke care. There is a dearth of stroke institutes in the poor areas here. Despite these alarming statistics, many poor Indian neighborhoods lack the infrastructure and organization needed to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients and do not receive adequate stroke care. There is a severe shortage of facilities for stroke care, especially in public sector hospitals.
