Bathua is believed to be native to Asia and Europe and has been growing there since prehistoric times. In the scripture it has been called ‘Vastuk’ and information has been given that this greens is destroyer of tridoshas and keeps the stomach clean.

Renowned Ayurveda expert Acharya Balkishan Bathue, who has done extensive research on Indian herbs, fruits and vegetables, also considers Bathue to be a medicine. They say that its consumption is beneficial in many diseases. It is an important and healthy vegetable. The leaves of this plant are antiscorbutic and antidiuretic. This is the only greens, in which many types of salts and alkalis are found, due to which it is also beneficial for stomach diseases.

According to well-known dietician Dr. Anita Lamba, Bathua’s greens are different from other greens in terms of taste. Actually this taste is made from the special vitamins and minerals found in it. Because of this, it keeps on cleaning the blood of the body continuously. Since there is a lot of digestible fiber in it, due to this the digestive system remains healthy and there is no problem of constipation. Due to this, this greens also keeps away from the problem of piles.

Vitamin C is also present in sufficient quantity in this greens. This vitamin also acts as an anti-inflammatory (relieving swelling and pain) and antioxidant in the body. It has been found in the research that the leaves of the Bathua plant help in reducing the blood sugar level. The minerals found in it can provide relief from bad breath, bleeding gums, sensitive teeth and other problems. Bathua is not known to have any side effects when consumed in moderate amounts.
