Difference Between RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 ti

NVIDIA releases new lineups of graphics cards each year, and so far the latest one that they have released is the RTX 3000 series that is based on Nvidia Ampere architecture. In this series, NVIDIA has lots of different cards, starting from the recently released RTX 3050 all the way up to the RTX 3090. There is also the RTX 3090 Ti, however, that is not released yet. Anyway, the RTX 3080 Ti and the RTX 3080 are some of the best that NVIDIA has on offer currently with its latest series. But, there is a big price gap between these two. And, there is also a Difference in performance. Many often wonder which NVIDIA graphics card should they be opting for between these two. So, today we would be comparing both of these, and guiding you on which graphics card should you be getting for yourself, the 3080 or the 3080 Ti.

We would be going over the differences between these two cards in various aspects such as their specifications, performance, power draw, price, etc.

Specifications

Firstly, let us talk about the difference in terms of the specifications of both of these cards. One thing to note is that there are two versions of the 3080, one comes with 10 GB of VRAM, whereas the other comes with 12 GB. Furthermore, the 12 GB variant also has more CUDA cores. Here are the specifications for the RTX 3080 and the RTX 3080 Ti.

ModelRTX 3080 TiRTX 3080
Boost Clock1.67 GHz1.71 GHz
NVIDIA CUDA Cores102408960 / 8704
Memory Size12 GB12 GB / 10 GB
Memory TypeGDDR6XGDDR6X

As the specification table of both might have made it clear, the 3080 Ti does come with almost 20% more CUDA cores. As for memory type, it is the same, and depending on the variant of the 3080, even the VRAM is the same. The boost clock is slightly higher on the 3080. Both of these are based on NVIDIA’s Ampere architecture.

Performance

We talked about the difference in specifications. Now, what about the performance? Well, as you saw above, the 3080 Ti has 10240 CUDA Cores, whereas the 3080 has 8960 on the 12 GB variant, and 8704 on the 10 GB variant. There is almost a 17% gap here, and that is what makes the 3080 Ti a better performer than the 3080. In fact, when it comes to the difference in frame rates, the difference is mostly around 10-15% as well. However, the 12 GB version is one average around 5% better than the 10 GB variant when it comes to gaming performance.

Features

In terms of features, both these cards are equivalent to each other. There is literally no difference. You get all the RTX 3000 series features such as real-time ray tracing (second-gen ray tracing), DLSS AI Acceleration, NVIDIA Studio, NVIDIA Broadcast, etc. with both these cards. Not to mention, just like every modern NVIDIA graphics card, you get all the NVIDIA-exclusive features as well such as Ansel, DX12 Ultimate, GeForce Experience, etc.

Power Draw (TDP)

When it comes to power draw, the 3080 Ti and the 3080 12 GB are the ones that demand more power. But, that makes complete sense as these also produce better performance. The 3080 is rated at  320 W TDP with the 10 GB variant and 350 W with the 12 GB variant. But, the 3080 Ti consumes is also rated at 350 W TDP. So, there is not too big of a difference between all these cards.

Price

Now, this is one aspect where there is a massive difference. We would be talking only of NVIDIA’s MSRP here, as the current prices are very much volatile. In India, NVIDIA’s MSRP for the RTX 3080 is 62,000 INR, whereas the MSRP for the RTX 3080 Ti is 1,07,000 INR. So, there is almost a 60% difference in terms of price.

Conclusion

So, as we can see, in terms of performance the RTX 3080 Ti is undoubtedly better than the RTX 3080. But, there is no denying that both of these are high-performance graphic cards and something that hardcore gamers would definitely want to have. But, when it comes to which one is the better NVIDIA graphics card between these two, I would actually go with the 3080 instead of the 3080 Ti. You might be wondering why? After all, the 3080 Ti is indeed better in performance. But, what you have to keep in mind is that it is 60% more expensive. Now, it is better than the 3080 just by 5-10%. Is that price difference worth this small improvement in frame rates? If you ask me, it is definitely not. So, if you are looking for the better card in terms of value, it is the 3080, but the 3080 Ti is indeed better in terms of raw performance.
