It has been confirmed that Li Bingbing won’t returning upcoming sequel Meg 2 The Trench. The first Meg, which was directed by blockbuster expert Jon Turteltaub, came to theaters in 2018 and hit #21 on the chart of highest-grossing domestic movies for the year. The film, which depended on Steve Alten’s original Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.
The camera is behind the scenes, The Meg 2: The Trench has confirmed that British horror director Ben Wheatley (Rebecca, High Rise) has been chosen to be the director of the sequel. Wheatley recently announced: “I’m storyboarding at the moment. It’s been happening for four, five years. It’s my favourite location, I’m obsessed with storyboarding.
“So yeah, I’m cutting storyboards and watching animatics, and slowly constructing the movie.” The report says The Hollywood Reporter: “Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the most recent draft working off an initial draft by Dean Georgaris (all three shared credit on the initial outing).”
Statham will be next seen as a character in “The Expendables 4” and Guy Ritchie’s “Orson Fortune,” in which he portrays a private contractor hired by a wealthy client to stop an arms dealer with a billionaire’s fortune from selling a new deadly weapon that could destroy the entire world. He’s also set to play the lead role on the screen in “The Bee Keeper,” written by “Salt” scribe Kurt Wimmer.
The Meg 2: The Trench Plot
Although The Meg is primarily the story of redemption for Jonas (as well as his getting to grips with his attraction to Suyin but also recognizing that he’s yet ready for a romantic relationship) the Film Ends with a smoky note of Jonas thinking about a vacation in the company of Suyin as well as her child Meiying (Sophia Cai). Most importantly the film ends by introducing the sounds of different Megalodons floating in the water which means that many of the species in Meg’s family have are out of in the trench and were now waiting to unleash chaos.
This implies this means The Meg 2: The Trench is an open book with many possibilities. One thing is for certain that it will include some huge sharks. Actually, it’ll include at the very least two according to Wheatley. “It’s really exciting. It’s just action on a massive, Goss bump… guaranteed, there will be a megalodon – maybe more than one.”

With the amount of work required for a film like The Meg to be cinema ready, we’re not likely to be seeing The Meg 2 anytime soon. Meg 2: The Trench has been officially certified as scheduled to be dated from Warner Bros. and is set to release on 4 August 2023.
