13. Butterfly Beach In Goa

This beach can only be reached via a long trek through the jungle or by boat. The jungle trek is my preferred option especially because the jungle makes it really easy to get lost. And it’s even more fun considering you’ll probably be doing the trek alone especially if you choose to visit in shoulder or off-season time (like I do).

You can start the trek from inside Leopard Valley (if you’re coming from Palolem). If you have a 2-wheeler, you can take it up to a certain point before you start to walk.

If you’re coming from Agonda, you can join the same route somewhere in between (the point where the road comes and joins from Agonda can be seen on the map above)

Do carry a flashlight and be mindful of snakes and langurs. I’ve never spotted a leopard there but many villagers have.

If you’re more on the tourist side (on the traveler-tourist scale), then you should hire the boat to the beach from Agonda Beach.

14. Benaulim Beach In Goa

The history of the Benaulim beach in Goa has an interesting legend behind it. It is said that the land of Goa was formed when the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu known as Parashuram shot an arrow in the sea and it receded to reveal the land of Goa. The place where the arrow fell is known as "Banali" in Sanskrit which was later corrupted by the Portuguese to Benaulim. That is how the Benaulim beach of India received its name. A welcome change from the other commercialized beaches, the Benaulim beach of Goa is a less hyped yet beautiful beach.

The rapid inflow of tourists has turned this once a fishing and rice farming village into a popular beach that commands a decent inflow of tourists every year. The Benaulim beach, which hardly made its way to the list of an average backpacker ten years back, has today gained much reputation and fame of being a happening beach in Goa. Benaulim beach is now famous for its water sports and lavish resorts. A peaceful place, this beach is one of those few beaches that provide unspoiled beauty away from the maddening crowds.

The beach provides a natural landscape and makes the surroundings absolutely photogenic. The tall swaying palm trees, the blue ocean, the golden sands, the wooden boats scattered at strategic places, all make this beach a scene out of Paradise. Occasionally you may find hawkers, fruit sellers, wandering masseurs, roaming on the beach. Benaulim beach is also popular because people can easily go swimming here as the water is free of jellyfish and other hazards.

Benaulim beach boasts of some of the best eateries. The fresh seafood, cooked in the exotic Goan style, and served with a warm smile is unbeatable. Besides restaurants and cafes, you can find some high-end resorts and hotels that get booked the minute the tourist season sets in. So book your rooms in advance if you want to enjoy the Benaulim beach without any hassles and tensions.

15. Cavelossim Beach In Goa

Cavelossim is famous for having one of the most beautiful beaches in Goa, and it doesn't disappoint. The brilliant white sands and crystal clear seas are a beach lover's paradise. Along with the obligatory sunbathing and water sports, you can even go in search of dolphins.

Hop into a boat and let a guide take you into the sea where you'll catch a glimpse of these cute creatures. To add a touch of five-star glamour to your holidays, the oceanfront Leela hotel has bagged a stunning spot right on the Arabian Sea. Along with the envious location, it boasts fantastic facilities, like golf courses and tennis courts, along with luxury rooms fit for a king.

Sleepy Cavelossim, straddling the coast road 11-km south of Colva, is the last major settlement in southwest Salcete: its only claim to fame. A short way beyond the village's picturesque church square, a narrow lane veers left across an open expanse of paddy fields to the Cavelossim-Assolna ferry crossing near the mouth of the Sal River.

16. Mandrem Beach In Goa

Situated in North Goa, Mandrem is a tranquil beach and counted among the most beautiful beaches in Asia. Serene and scenic, Mandrem is preferred by honeymooners. The secluded beach provides much-needed privacy for the honeymooners. A sleepy small village, there is nothing much to do in Mandrem. Laze around on the beach or take a swim in the clear waters or visit the eateries to enjoy local food, Mandrem is ideal for do-nothing vacation.

Mandrem is, for many, the best-kept secret on the north Goan coast, as laid back and languid a destination as you could possibly hope for. Yoga, meditation and Ayurveda are the orders of the day, and you’ll find ever-changing options for spiritually slanted exercise and enlightenment along its sands. Head here for a day or two of beach-bound bliss, and you might find it hard to tear yourself away. This quiet hideaway in North Goa has the advantage of not being a popular destination on the tourist trail, which is why it’s a top pick for honeymooners and for couples looking for a quiet getaway.

There are a few beach shacks and the odd guesthouse in season, but you really have to make your own entertainment on this deserted stretch. Mandrem beach is situated after the Ashwem beach and before the Arambol Beach. It is a continuation of Ashwem beach and very similar to it. It has a number of beach huts, small guest houses, and some resorts. Many locals also let out their homes on rent. This beach is quiet compared to the other beaches, is frequented by foreign tourists who want to relax and live in harmony with nature. This beach is quite empty and isolated, and have limited facilities for visitors.

17. Patnem Beach In Goa

Patnem beach, south of Palolem beach is a beautiful palm-fringed bay with another continuation south over a little headland. It’s essentially a little Palolem, with fewer people, fewer beach huts and restaurants, fewer palms, and fewer hawkers and gawkers. It’s a great alternative to Palolem if you are looking for somewhere a little more laid-back and cheaper. It’s definitely not a second-best to Palolem though, with good accommodation and restaurants.

The beach has a good selection of restaurants and stalls. The beach road has travel agents who can change money, Internet access, motorbike and bicycle rental, convenience stores, kayak rental, and small sailing catamarans can also be rented.

On most days in winter there is a tiny wave that could be surfed with a longboard or fatty fish. Occasionally the swell is a little bigger, and you’re looking at 3ft on the face at best. But, the water is warm and there is rarely another surfing insight. Only cheap board boards can be rented, so you’ll need to bring your own equipment. The surf at Palolem is much the same.

Patnem accommodation prices are cheaper than in Palolem. Most accommodation at Patnem is beach huts on the beach. There are some guesthouses on the beach road and some just off the beach north towards Palolem. There are several houses and rooms with bathrooms and kitchens for rent, which can be good for larger groups and long stays, but all are a little away from the beach.
